Band Needs More Players The Roseburg band held its regu lar practice last night at the city hall. A large number of those who signed the agreement to practice rmularly failed to how up at the rehearsal last niKbt and those be itind the movement for a city band ire greatly disappointed. Future ap propriations from the city council depend entirely upon tbe success with which the present organitation meets and unless practices are well attended the band will be lost to lhc cltv. At the present time pros pects are better than ever before. There are a large number of young musicians, many of whom have seen service In army or navy bands and it is possible at this time to create a musical organliation larger than has aver been known before In Roseburg. W. H. Howden the director is cap aide of gling excellent instruction ind with the support of the musi cians good baud la assured. However, It Is extremely discour aging to have only a few in attend ance and those who are working hard - interest of the band are anx- ' lous to Bee more players in attend ance at rehearsals. A number of 1 Kood selections have been added to the repertoire of the hand but will bo useless unless all of the playerc i have learned them. It is desired that all who can play I musical instruments become mem- I lipi'S of the hand and attend regu larly. Over thirty have signed up InlihnuEh only half that number were in attendance last night. It is ! desired to add at least a doren more I 'nstruments and those wno can pia ! will confer a great favor on the I band by getting in touch with V. 11. illowden, the director. ! . -I. l-.I.KTOV XOTKH. ! KitthuKiuHtic lileothiir; With Ijukc Niuulier of (rouei-H Present. . Farm Bureau Monthly.) The sheep and gout raisers hld a very interesting and enthusiast meeting at the city hall in Rosebur on April the 2nd. The meeting wat called by the Douglas County Kan; bureau and was the result of a questionnaire sent out to the sheep and goat raisers a few months ago. Douglas comity is the leading cuuiu. in the production of sheep and goat in western Oregon. There are ap proximately seven hundred poo pi In the county owning either sheep o goats, with no kind of organlzatio' and no methods of ro-opuration Ih tween the individual ftmners. This meeting was culled for th purpose of seeing if it was not po slide for them tot organize for mu tuul protection and assistance. Look Ing at It from this standpoint, th meeting was an entire success. Trn' O. M. Nelson from the college, an Paul Mehl from the Bureuu of Ma kets, were present and rendered ma terliil assistance in forming the or ganization. It ts not the plan of the organfra 'Ion (o form a marketing organiza tion this year, as It was thought necessary to obtain some reliable in formation In regard to the methods of marketing, quality nnd quan tity of wool produced in the county before they can Intelligently market their product. It Is the intention, however, to ge together a small amount of wool, probably a carload, and have It sent to Portland and graded and sold on a consignment basis. In this way 'hey will accumulate information that may be of value if It Is decided to co-operatively market the wool and mohair In the future. The association plans this year to bring Into the county one or more carloads of purebred bucks, as well as a large number of ewes. It w-at also decided to ask the county cour' to increase the bounty on coyotes ! $25 or more as an Inducement l hunters and trappers to kill the an I mbl, that Is causing a heavy Ins amongst the sheep and goat nfiser ;n the county. The meeting adopted a constitu tion and by-laws. The following i a statement of the objects of the or ganfzntion as contained in the con stitution and by-laws: To promote the breeding and Im provement of sheep and goats ol Douglas county. To aid members in buying, breeding and selling first -class animals. To improve the methods of mar ketlng wool, mutton and mohair. To render mutual assistance In th( protection of the flocks from the depredations of coyotes and othei predatory animalH. To disseminate Information that Is of vital interest to the sheep and goat Industry of Douglas county. The by-laws provide for a mem bership fee of $1.00. Fifty men paid their membership fees at the tneel I up. and ft is planned to put on a campaign to cover the whole county and secure as many members as pos sible. It Is also desired that every person In the county, whether a member of the association or not, wishing Mo purchase a purebred buck or having one for sale to communicate with the County Agent, as It is realized that there Is in the county a great many animals whose useruluesH roubl be extended at least two years by trans ferring from one flock to another. If this Information fn sent in at once it will materially aid the committee In their work. The following were elected as offi cers of the nssocia'ton : Loyal V. Emery, president: B. F. Nichols, vice-president; C. J. Kurd, secretary: C. E. Banning. tresstirer; and Remlrk Fate. WM1 I. Dixon, F. A. Remls, F. F. Veils nnd .T. C Barnes is members of the executive conimlt t ee. .
