An enormous crop of blo-oniH in (lit1 inline orchards of I lie rinp'iua valley, Oregon, this taring rained the hopi'H of the growers Into the Hud- hoii Htiper-Hfx t'laH. pencil ceil prune men estimated ilie crop during bloom lime at 14.0011.00(1 pounds when 1 1,000,000 pounds li ml heen the prevlotiH high-water mark. About that time buyers began to flood the prune diKtrictH with record prices, offering 12, 1 It V and up to lu cent a pound for 110 to S.Vh, iho hiRlmsT price ever received for IblH fruit hi nee the Industry was raiKed to the piano of commercial production. CoiiditioitH hnl been Ideal in every way for a heavy set. The. winter bad been mild, there were no frostn of consequence, and no brown roi infectioiiH to (died the blynnomn. With every factor then apparently perfect for a bumper set of fruit, what was the amazement of the K rower to nee li Jh crop shed off day by day util hut 60 per cent of the original emimateH remained. Many traeia were left barren. One well known grower with a contract In his pocket calling for 15 cents u pound for :to to :i5'n on 50,000 poimdH of fered to Bull hiK crop for 1 10. Comparative observations lu hund reds of orchards under varying con ditions leads the writer to conclude that a certain cultural practice is di rectly responsible for this unusually heavy crop. The summer of 1 ? 1 7 was dry in the l'mpua valley. This was followed by another record dry spell in llilfi which caused manv peculiar physiological disturbances to occur. A familiar one was an exler nad gumming followed by a drying of the tissues of the fruit, resulting in a heavy pre-hurvest drop. Drier men state that prunes dried out eas ier in I'.t l h than in any previous year. I'etiles ran 'H to :; 1 pounds to the biivhel, while Italians went V heavy an Uli to Uti pounds. .Mueh wood whs saved and the grower.- i: rally were pleased at the closi of the Reason. Incidentally It may bo noted that tho l'etile prune reaches a remarkable denroo of perfection in the iMjrtlo Creek section, which Is the earliest marketing district in western Oregon. The contention of the writer is that t lie heavy shed Is due to the preceding dry seasons which left the fruil buds weakened. Tho crop in Douglas county was not above r lie average but the moisture supply was much less. This resulted in a heavy biootn followed by a drop. Spitzen berg apples, on the other hand, had no crop In Douglas county In 1 !( I S ; therefore, in the tracts which were cared for tho fruit spurs received sufficient nourishment with the re sul' that ilie Hpilzenberg crop is very promising this season. Prune growers everywhere have been coining lo tho practice of early plowing and Kubsonuent freuuenl cultivation. The result lias been that there ate fewer crop failures in (lie prune business of late years lhaii for merly. Had Ihe 1 !i 1 s season I u normal lite difference in crops be tween orchards which were treated properly early In Iho spring and those which were not would not have been so great. As it is the differ ence is very striking. The lesson Is .ipparenl in various districts in Doug las counly. For instance, W. (.'. Harding, of Hosehitrg. worked his ground early In I !l I s anil ah o In l!H!'.N Hi- has a good crop this sea son, as well as last siaosn, while neighboring orchards otherwise treated well so far as pruning, spray ing, and feriili.ing are i.oncci red, have very shy crops and one In par ticular on similar soil anil the same age has no crop at all. Harding, in oilier words, preserved bis soil mois ture early lor th.. time when ihe trull would draw heavily. The res,.
