Starting ahead when the cur was
supposedly left in neutral, the heavy
Sludebaker touring car recently pur
chafed by Charles Beckley, of llx
onvillc. this morning crashed into a
Ford In front of the Crand Hotel
and then ran the second machine in
to the rear of another Ford, owned
by Hurry Mathews, also of Dlxon-villt-.

be stopped, the three machines were
driven tor a distance of over -0 feet,
finally being halted by striking a
pile of gravel and other material ly-
, itiK In front of the Federal building.
I The Incident attracted a large crowd
of people.

! whn the parties were taken to the
; city recorder's office to attempt to
: settle thH damage. W. L. Gregory,
of Portland, a service man In the
employ of the Sludebaker company,
admitted starting the Peckley ma
chine, and for a short time it was
thought he would be charged with
violating the traffic ordinance.
Gregory was t obstinate, however,
and the matter was only adjusted af
ter the parties went Into private con
sultation, and Mr. ileckley promised
to give satisfaction outsld of court.
The charges against Gregory were
then dropped.
According to those seeing the ac
cident, Gregory started the heavier
I machine with u view of testing the
carburetor. He supposed the car
hud been left in neutral gear and
did not even take the driver's seat.
He had one foot on the ground and
with the other pressed the self
starter. The machine then started
.and he was unable to stop It until it
had done ttie damage.
Mr. Iteckley said he asked Greg
ory to look after the carburetor. The
Ford a head .was ow ned by 1 . D.
Sherman, a tourist from California,
a ud was damaged to the extent of
broken lamps and bent fenders. The
Matthews machine was damaged but
slightly.

HARD WORK REPORTED
Mr. and Mrs. GeorKe Neuner this
morning received a b-ner Irom their
son, Frank Neuuer. w ho is attend
ing the officers' training camp at
the Presidio. In his letter to lay
parent h, Ihe young man says the
boys have experienced much hard
work and those persons who thought
they were going to San Francisco to
enjoy a vacation were disappointed.
The boys arise at b:'Mt o'clock tn the
morning and the routine continues
until after 8 o'clock at ninht. An
hour later the boys must he In bed.

one of the officers In charge of the
camp.
Although having received no
commission. M r. .Neuner says he is
In charge of drilling some of the
men. Final eva mi nations are now
in progress and the assignments will
he made within the next few days.
It Is Mr. Neuner's opinion that many
of those who are attending the
camp will receive commissions, anil
will later be assigned to the various
forts situated in different parts of
the Lnited Slates.

Although no definite action was
taken in regard to charges against
F. 11. I'avies, former bookkeeper
for the L mpiua Valley Fruit L'nion,
more than Go broccoli growers were
present at the union's headquarters
in North Koseburg this morning,
when the meeting was held to hear
the season's report and learn the ex
tent of various irregularities in ac
counts. The report was made hy H. V.
Collins, of Portland, an expert ac
count a nt h ired by t he d i rectors of
the union to go over Mr. Da vies'
hooks. The accountant declared that
very item in the hooks had to be
checked over, and that many had
been omitted which had to he sup
plied, before even an approximate
understanding of the firm's affairs
could be determined. The growers
contented themselves "Willi learning
the results of the broccoli season
from Mr. Collins this morning, and
the directors took up the case of Mr.
Iavfes with the accountant this af
ternoon. At a late hour the direct
ors were still talking, and it prob
ably will not be learned before Mon
day what steps will be taken toward
seeking satisfaction for the alleged
shortages. According to the figures
presented by the expert, the short
ages may amount to more than $1,
ihio. Mr. Davles was discharged
about a month ago, and Is now in
Los Angeles, after being confronted
with an accusation by the board of
directors.
The report, which was prepared
by Mr. Collins, places the average
return on the broccoli crop at $ 1 . 4
a crate, for the first grade produce,
84 cents for Kecond grade and fia
cents for third grade produce. The
total return was over $:i1,noo.
Light per cent of this amount, how
ever, will be retained by the union.
In explanation of the low price, sev
eral of the officials pointed out that
the l!H7 crop was greatly inferior
on account of the cold weather last
winter and that many of the oars
were handled at a deficit. New
plans were discussed this afternoon,
ami one advanced was that of pool
ing the product in each car separate
ly. It is believed, however, that no
change will be made from the meth
ods employed in marketing heretofore.
