Say !4ttcr. anil CoiiKtunt I'utrol Iteinj; kept Aliinu Coai.1 SllKUl' Slili W'uit Sunk, Canbijjg DiniiiM)' The latest report on the conditions in KnKland and one of the most in teresting and accurate ohtained here since the beginning of the war, was received today by W. W. Thackrah, of Kast louglaa fitreet, from his sis ter, Mrs. Samuel Itoberts, who is a prominent resident of Falmouth, Kugland, now one of the chief ports on the western coast. Says Mrs. Roberts, there was not at the time her letter was written, a single ounce of sugar in all the city. While the people are not starv ing, they were nevertheless reduced to a living based almost entirely on rice Hiul beans. Itread is doled out in ratioiH by the Jovernment, while meat is so scarce that one pound of lamb In over a week was all she was able to secure. One of tho greatest disappointments, however, occurred in the way of a disaster to shipping only recently when a big vessel laden with sugar for that port was sunk by a German submarine just outside the harbor. This was like depriving them of food on the way to the month. The entire population was aroused. Mrs. Iloherts also stated that on her estate, which is at the edge of the city, the Knglish government had a short time ago decided to lo cate a camp for the stationing of American troops on their way to France. Forty lady cooks are al ready located in her house, she said, waiting for the troops to arrive, she Is paid a rent for the purpose hy the British government. Mrs. Huberts wittingly remarked that she would be glad if Mrs. Thackrah would en list as one of these cooks. In another interesting part of the letter. Mrs. Itoberts says the air about the city is constantly filled with aeroplanes. These maintain a steady patrol to watch the coast lor Ilie appearance of enemy submar ines or parties or attacking airmen. Falmouth, on account of the closing of the port of Liverpool. Is or vast importance as an army post and shipping point and is very carefully protected. Mrs. Itoberts says Fiigtand is now settled down lo thi business of war and lhat the people are everywhere optimistic as the result of the co operation of the 1'nited Stales.
