Failing to regain consciousness alit-r the fatal injuries sustained by being run over by an automobile ! while she was playing on the Brown 1 bringe, near tiaiuen Valley, yester l .lay afternoon, six-year-old I.etha Alice Harness .only child of Mr. uuu Mrs. Ku siell Harness, of North Kose burg, died at Mercy hospital at t o'clock la.il evening. In the automobile, driven by Charles t ields, a popular clerk in the UoM-burg postolfice, were Mrs. Fields and t'rot and Mrs. F. It. Hamlin. They had just turned around at the northern end of the bridge structure, alter watching the operations of the lisiiermen, and were proceeding to wards home, when the child was , si ruck and run over by u forward 1 wheel. A mark ol the tire was across her chest ami she was practi cnll lifeless when her father picket hT up and rushed her here to the I hospital. 1 1 was seen at once that she could not live, although no ef tort was spared, and four houra af-1 ter the tragedy she died. I The details of tiie sad accident were seen by several people who were on tho bridge at the same time, among them being Mr. and Mrs. Har ness, t Me child's parents, w bo had been o the bridge for a few hours. The former was w a telling a line Ah tell he was managing in the waters of tho North I'mpqua Klver Ix-low, and looked up barely in time lo see his daugltier go beneath the Mis. Harness was at the other end of the structure and apprehend ed t he seriousness of t he accident immediately. Close by were Mr. and Mr. ii. C. Witham, of Deer Creek, who had stopped their machine to t-pond a few minutes watching the anglinc As the Fields car came up the ap proach Mr. Fields had his attention distracted by passing the Witham car as well as hy his interest in the fish ing operations and the management of his own machine. The child had been playing on the bridge for some time, and as the car approached she seemed to be looking through the railing at the river. Kvldently she was not aware of the nearness of the machine, no more than the driver had knowledge of her motion to cross his path. The car was about opposite her. however, when the girl suddenly turned and made to go to tli.- opposite side. She screamed, as did several others, but being unable to move away, she threw up her hands as the fender caught her body and da-hed h r to the floor. Moving i y slowly, t he machine w as slopped ulnioM instantly, but one wheel had passed over her tiny form. Her lather, who was a few feet way, was ai her side Jn a moment. The tragedy occurred about 3:30, iind a few minutes later the child was in tin h.tiness machine and racing to lo w n. Dr. A. C. Seely made a pre liminary examination, and ordered her at one' to Mercy Hospital. Here ,-b.. was examined more carefully by Drs. S''.'ly and Sether. It waf found ihat the skull was fractured at the b;.-e. thai several ribs on the right Pid' wre also fractured, that the eh. st w is cru-did and the lungs fill d with blood, and there were ul ii'-r injuries about the body and face. I. ate this afternoon It was decided to hold the funeral at the Klks 'tem ple at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The s'-rvle-s will be in charge of K. v. V. H Katon and Interment will follow in the Masonic cemetery. The child was a beautiful little girl and w,is tiie liuht of her home. 'According to the facts uncovered by Mr. Kaffety, the Italian who claims to have lost the money acted as sort of ft bank for a large number of his fellow countrymen. Of the crew, about one-half are Creeks, and one of these la thought to have slip ped the purse containing the large sum of money out of the Italian's pocket. With Southern Pacific Agent tlarbe. the local officer searched all members of the crew and all the earn occupied by the Creeks but could find no trace of the missing gold Several witnesses were examined, but while all hnd suspicions, no con clusive proof seemed available war ranting an arrest. Mrs. Herbert Judah. ot San Francisco. Stunned by the unexpected an- nouncement, the parents will leave, however, for the latter city tonight. According tto the message, Mrs. Judah, died at 4 o'clock this morn ing. She got up during the niht to take some medicine and by mistake used the wrong buttle, thinking il contained a nerve tonic, useful in relieving a temporary aijinent.
