The slate superintendent's last repot" t
show.' that only thirieen per rent of
t he grade teachers of t he state are
normal school graduates and he,
more than any other one man, ap
preciales the need for more compe
tent instruction, particularly In the
rural schools.
"Oregon's greatest need for Its ru
ral schools iff the teacher who has
had I u II preparat ion to do her
work." he said in making public his
endorsement of ihe measure. "Such
preparation can best come through
normal school training.
"I IruM that the voters of the stnt
will assist in raising the standard of
our schools by establishing a state
normal school at Tendloton. The lo
cation Is central, the Interest of the
people of Pendleton in education
most excellent, and the large number
of pupils in t he public schools will

L. Lucas had the misfortune to fall
and, striking on his right side
against a log f i .i t tired one of his
ribs, siiv s the Port Pmpqua Cour
ier. He had opened t lie boom lor
i he purpose of allowing a raft of
log 4 to enter, hut owing to his fall
he was unable lo dose tin boom
after the tide came in. This floated
the logs In the boom out Into the
river and u pstrea in at a good rate
of speed. The mill company put out
their lugs and boats and finally sue
ceeded in corraUiig the floating logs
with their hoomlogs. after which
thev were go((en back Into the boom.
In the meantime. Mr. Lucas had so
recovered that he got home without
any great dil l i. ulty and was on to
his- job the next day as if not hi tig
had ha ppciied. It takes a w hole
lot to keep ;i good loan down, and
Link Lucas is no exception.
