EVENING ROSEBURG REVIEW MAY 21, 1B14. HOMES OF THE NAVAJOS." Stuffy Winter Hogani and Light and Airy Summer "Cottages." Tbe Nnvajos are the leat grvuiirlons of uutive American tribes, never con gregaUng lu towns uud vllages and never forming permanent communi ties. Their homes, called bogaus, are mere hovels, built or atones or the trunks uud limbs of trees, with round ed roofs thickly cuvetcd with earth. A iuolie vent lu the roof uud u door wuy in the side ore the only means of ventilation. In cold went her these cuvellke structures ure kept tightly closed, so tii.it no one but un Indian could live lu them ut nil. But when springtime conies the Navajo squaw constructs a summer cottage, sometimes consisting of uo more than u windbreak of sagebrush around u circular clear space. Some times the summer Ionian is a shady bower under a desert cedar tree, with leafy branches piled around us a meas ure of protection umiinst winds uud sandstorms. Sometimes it is a shelter formed by the utllluitiuu ot old pieces of canvas, sheet iron and other cast away material picked up nieund the refuse dumps of the railroad towns. In any event, the dwellers lu the sum mer hogims ure practically In the open all the time. Fresh air is never for a tuomeut cJchidod.-ChrlsUan Herald. NAILS IN STONE WALLS. Eaey Method of Placing Them So They Will Remain Firm. Few women know how to drive a null Into a brick wall, anil yet it Is what they often need to do for them selves if there Is no man about The following method is easy and has been found entirely satisfactory: Hav ing decided upon the exact spot Into which the nail Is desired to be driven, which must be lu the plaster between the bricks, provide yourself with a hammer and screwdriver. With these tools commence working uut the hard piaster by tapping the handle of the screwdriver. As the plaster turns to dust It must be blown or dusted out so that the size of the hole may be seeu. When a space iilumt one inch long and nearly one Inch deep has been worked out get a small piece of woud about the same size and with the hammer wedge It tightly into the space. When It seems lirui take the nail and drive it into the wuod. It will go in nicely, without bending, nnd remain firm un Indefinite length of time. This same method was used at one time when it was decided to hang a hammock be tween the fence and the wall, with the exception that the hole was dug out a little longer and deeper than for an or dinary nail.
