The two House of Congress started In the work of thla week with ses sions on Monday, the House of Rep resentatives convening at noon and the Senate at 2 o'clock in the after noon. The metal schedule reducing the tariff on steel passed the House on MonC'.y by a vote of 211 yeas against 110 nays. The credentials of Honorable Ollle M. James, newly elected Senator from Kentucky, were presented to the Senate on Tuesday by Senator Payn ter, the aenlor Senator from Ken tucky. Mr. James was up to the time of his election to the Senate, a mem ber of the House of Representatives. The Senate adopted a resolution on Thursday calling upon the Secretary of the Interior to submit a statement to the Senate showing the number of acres of land withdrawn from entry by Executive order or otherwise and for what purposes such withdrawals have been made, also what amount so withdrawn from classification has been classified and restored to entry and when In hi Judgment the re mainder of the withdrawn land will be classified and restored to the operation of the public land laws. Honorable Clauds Augustus Swan son, who was appointed Senator from Virginia to fill th vacancy caused by the death of the late Sena tor John Warwick Daniels, took bis oath of office and seat in th Senate on Thursday. Count Francis Luetiow, of Bo hemia, was present In the House of Representatives on Friday. On mo tion of Majority Leader Underwood the House took a recess of 15 min utes, during which time the Count was presented to the members and made a brief address, which was well received. Congressman Berger, the Socialist member from Milwaukee, objected to Inviting the Count, but later withdrew hla objection. House Bill 18956, now pending In the House, ' carrlea an appropriation of $88,853,757 for the military es tablishment of the United States for the next fiscal year. - Thla Is a reduc tion of $3,784,028.79 over last year's bill, and a reduction of $8,074,231 over the estimate made by the War Department for the Army. . Aunt Delia remained In the East Room to watch the Informal dancing t hat fallowed the reception. When the strains of the beautiful "Blue Danube" waits struck up and the President, according to his Invariable custom took a few turns around the room with one of the guests, Aunt Delia was plainly delighted to see "Nephew Will" so agile. Postmaster Gen eral Hitchcock, Cabinet officers and diplomats galore attended moving pictures recently at the Playhouse Club, the Thespian home of Wash ington's elite. It Is whispered that some of the pictures were posed by members, as Secretary Meyer on skates, ViBcountess D'Arsy skiing, and even the President playing golf. Mr. and Mrs. Edward II. McLean tendered a reception and dinner to the Russian Ambassador and Mine, llahkmetlff Friday evening. It Is re ported that the affair cost $30,000. Among the decorations were 4000 yellow lilies Imported from England at a cost of $2 each. Mrs. McLean, the hostess, wore diamonds valued at over $180,000, among which was the famous Hope diamond which waB recently presented to Mrs. McLean by her husband and shown for the first time In America that evening. The Hope diamond Is said to have brought III lurk to everyone who has ever owned It, but Mrs. McLean says she Is certain that anything given to her by her husband will bring her good luck.
