Gear, a, both ex United States Senators, that tbey would not be candidates for the Sen atonsblp has done much to clarify the Oregon Senatorial situation. Neither Mr. Fulton nor Mr. Gearln was a candidate for bis party's nomi nation, but each had been urgently requested by party voters to enter the contest. Their action In declin ing to become candidates means that Ben Selling is likely to announce bis candidacy for the Republican nomi nation. Jt Is expected also that Dr. Harry Lane will seek the Democratic nomination. Mr. Selling and Dr. Lane are expected to announce their caudlducies before the end of the week, posulbly today or tomorrow. (ILL MAY AGAIN' UK MA VOK OF SEATTLE. SEATTLE, Feb. 19. Ore. Chlckenitis has a good grip on Roaeburg and Douglas County peo ple. It has been spreading until tbls is Just a bot-bed of It. A few years ago you could count the fanciers on the fingers of one hand, but now you would have to go up In the three figures to count tbera all. I, like many others, contribute my Inoculation to the Casa Granda Poul try Yards. Having been a personal friend of the manager for years, and to converse with him you must talk chicken, my first step was a few birds, then the poultry shows. Then take it from me. you are a dead one If you have not got Chlckenitis. I felt at my first show, like one of my neighbors, who came Into our show to see the Barred Rocks. He said. "We have to go some to beat his on the farm." A half hour later he told me "His were Just chickens." So much for the educational show room. Like my neighbors and many others. I began to add high scoring birds to our flocks, and our ambi tion was to have not only the best birds In the community, but the best in the state or Northwest. But be ginners cannot get a start of high scoring birds without going down In to their pockets and paying good prices, as we did. And when you take Into considera tion the amount of poultry and eggs that are shipped into this Northwest every year.it is not hard to predict that the poultry Industry Is just In Its Infancy, and the parties who get in and breed up a fine flock of any standard variety will be amply repaid in the future for the time and money spent. My advice to the beginner would be to get a few high scoring birds of just one breed, take good care of them; take them to a poultry show or two, win or lose, and you will soon learn just what you want and you will know when you get It. If you are In doubt as to what variety to start with. I would recom mend the Huff or White Orpington, as they are a large bird, easy to handle and we find them good layers. If you prefer a laying breed, we like our Black Mlnorcas. They are a good sized chicken, lay an extreme ly large white egg and are non sitters. X. X. ItAII.IKl All TO COOS HAY. In a commercial and financial sense a railroad to Coos Bay would be of incalculable value to Southern and Central Oregon. We can prove that we are commensurate with so laudable and much needed accom pl!?hment which will give us more direct access to the chief ports of the world, thereby Insuring a market for the many millions of dollars worth of our prospective products. Our luscious fruits will wend their way to the Orient and gladden the hearts of millions of people of all ages, and In return swell our coffers. Besides, such commerce will have a tendency to familiarize us with peo ple who are now comparatively strange. In addition it will stimulate an ardent desire to engage In other and various enterprises, such as can neries, manufacturing, etc. Our ptipiilalUin will Increase and our en terprise will sound the keynote to the dawn of a new era in our coun try's history. Are we equal to the emergency? Shall we cast our bread (se'd upon the waters and have equal houors with the great Isthmian Canal. If so. our posterity will rise up and call us blessed. L. C. 1I1J.L.
