Mrs. Ivan Haines arrived here Sun nay afternoon from Sluslaw on a visit with her parents, Mr. aud Mrs. W. W. Taylor, in the Hardscrabble neighborhood. Floyd and Joe Craig have both re turned home after spending the summer working In the logging eaniiiB on Scolleld Creek, near (Inrdlner. Moses Mack, now a resident of Salem, was here during the past week looking after business matters. Mrs. Hounds, an aunt of Mrs. C. F. Counts, of this city, died at her home in Cottage Grove lest Wednes day, and was buried at that place on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Counts at tended the funeral. Mrs. Hounds was formerly the wife of H. W. Churchill, of Drain. Eugene Joslyn has sold his moun tain farm, four miles west of town, to Southern California people named Turner. This farm la locally known ;is the Ilasard place. The Turner folks were former neighbors of the Pattersons, who now reside on the John Allen place, and they will again be neighbors. "Aunty" Jackson has been serious ly ill during the past week with pneumonia, but at this writing Is somewhat Improved and Is believed to be on the road to recovery. Her daughter, Mrs. Maud Estes, aud grand-daughter, Mrs. Bertha Fraley, both of Portland, have been at her bedside for several days pnst. About 10,000 pounds of dressed turkeys were shipped from here the past week for the Thanksgiving trade. Excellent work Is being done In the Drain high school this winter. Prof. J. E. RdwerB is at the helm and is ably assisted by Mrs. C. W. De vore and Miss Esmer Mister. The grammar grades are also doing nice ly. A telephone line Is being con structed for the benefit of four or Ave families in the neighborhood up Elk Creek, east of town. It is being built by the people of the neighbor hood and will he connected with the central office in town. The local grist mill will soon be rendv for operation. The machinery now being installed was brought here from a mill at Ashland, In this state, where Its use had ceased to be profitable. It is being Installed In ihe building formerly used by E. A Johnson, who is now successfully operating a mill at Albany. We are informed that John Haney has a contract to plow and put Into celllvntion four hundred acres of the Sunnvdule tract, recently pur chased bv the Churchill-Matthews Company, of Portland, an orchard syndicate doing an extensive business throughout the country. This com pany bought about two thousand acres in Sunnydale Valley last sum mer and it will be planted to or chards as fast as It can be piU Into a good slate of cultivation. The land In this valley has already proved to be splendid fruit land, for either apples, pears or prunes, and is bound to become one of the most profitable industries In the county.
