SPLENDID QUARTERLY.
The Quarterly of the Oregon His
torical Society for March, 1910, Vol.
II, No. 1, lies upon our table. During
the past ten years the Society has
Issued oved five thousand pages of
historical matter relating to the "Ore
gon Country" the entire Pacific
Northwest all secured from original
sources, and. edited by Prof. F. G.
Young. Secretary. No publication of
a similar character in the United
States tins a higher standing or is
more eagerly sought for by those who
desire to acquaint themselves with
the genesis of the American settle
ment west of the Rocky Mountains.
The contents of the present issue are
as follows: "Oregon Counties: Their
Creations nnd the Origins of Their
Names," the annual address of Mr.
Frederick V. Holman, President of
the Society, at the annual meeting,
Dec. 18, 1909; "Opinion of Wm. D.
Fenton on the Power of the Legisla
ture to Increase the Number of Jus
tices Constituting the Supreme Court
of Oregon." It is interesting to note
that this opinion, given Jan. 13,
1899, was sustained by the Supreme
Court of Oregon on Dec. 21, 1909.
The address of Mr. Holman, from a
purely historical point of view, is
one of the most important ever de
livered in the state. Months of time
were spent in preparation, and great
care exercised in establishing every
statement made by reference to
original sources. This address will
be of great service to every educa
tional Institution and business office
in the Pacific Northwest, as It af
fords the starting point for nil future
county history. Copies may be se
cured by sending to George H. Hlmes,
Assistant Secretary, City Hall, Port
land, Oregon.
