Good roads will open for set tlement and cultivation land now lying out of the rudlus of profitable farming. I It will put more square miles of terri tory within tn.de distance of your IOWU. The business men of auy town are Interested lu bringing to that town trade from greater distances than is easily covered on our present roads. It Increases the volume of business, aud every man In businesi lu the com muulty receives bis share of the bene fit The farmer Is able to haul bis grain and produce to market at less cost and makes a greater prollt per year from his labor. This additional profit Is represented by tbe nddltlonnl amount of cash he has to spend with the borne dealers. When tbe farms are auide to pay larger dividends more settlers wltl come to your neighbor hood, and all of them will hove to spend money with you and your fel low business meu. So, directly and In directly, the business men nre benefit ed by tbe building of good roads. SURFACE DRAINAGE OF ROADS This Is an Important Pasture When Conatructing Highways. Professor J. It. Davidson of the Iowa AKrlcultural college, who la an authority on the drainage of lilxhwajs to those Interested lu tbe construction of good roads, snys that all roads should be itovlded with surface drain age. Tbe cross section should be of such a shape as to abed all rain at once to the side dltcbes. To do this the road must be oval or bnve a crown aud must be smooth. The tirst of these Is a matter of construction and tbe lat ter a matter of maintenance. Tbe Bide drainage system should be culled upon to carry as mucb wnter as possible. Water cannot be carried away by the tile drains until the water has sunk through the soli uml softened It. Tbe cruwn of it road should be suth- clent to shed the water readily. If the road is to te maintained aud kept free from ruts mid holes less crowu will do than if the road is to be neglected. The Iowa highway commission recommend ed a slope one inch to a foot for a crown lu the traveled way. This la sulUclent for unst conditions. Tho crown should not be too great A steep crowu causes the travel to be couceutrated at the center, where ruts will be worn nud washiug result. Again, there Is some difficulty lu vehi cles passing. On the Bide of the crown the wheels of the vehicles have a tend ency to grind the road dowu. This action, together with the swerving or flow action of the lower part of the wheel, has a very marked effect. Tbe steeper the single of tbe road tbe more important the crown, for there Is a teudency for the water to run down the track rather than to the side. If water once begins to run down the center of the roadway it 19 but a short time until the road Is gullied out. Juvanila Good Roada League. A town in New Jersey saw the eco nomical uecessity of rond improvement aa a means of rei'npturiug scholars who had gone to the city schools. A Vermont farmer declares that Improv ed roads mean larger districts aud a better grade of teachers. But good road sre costly and most costly when lack of timely care allows them to go to pieces. A suggestion comes from Washington that Junior rond leagues be formed iu country districts for the reason that country roads are "actual ly patrolled twice a day by schoollwys old enough to give the necessary atten tion to throwlus; out stones, opening ditches and sluices, draining off storm arater. filling ruts and holes and giv ing notice to proper authorities of auy thing needing prompt attention on their part." Harper's Bazar. Oood (teas Metteaa. Hood roads promote rural optimism. Mutlhole are the forerunners of good nJs. Many a "good enough" roJ Is not good road at all. It takes more than talk to mate ft giA rd. tboagtt talk Is netessir to tart It.
