The Ieirtment of Ak- rlculture has Just completed the sta tistic. The protective value of the work of the Department Is shown In test (1) Almost eighty per cent of the fire were extinguished before as aiuch as Ave acre had been dani- aaed; (2) leaa than one and one- If acre to the square mile of Na tional Forest land was burned over (3) and the amount of damage done to the burned-over area avernaed but ai. 2a per acre. The ana burnad over H ill round flguraa, 380,000 acre, of which about 82,000 were private lands In National Forests, as against some 800,000 acres in 1908. Some 170,- 080.000 board) feet of timber was consumed, of which 33,000,000 feet was privately owned, as against 230.- 000,000 iu tha provloua year. The loss In value of timber destroyed was Ian than 1300,000, o( which close to 150,000 was privately owned. Tha loss or the year before was about 1450,000. Damage done to reproduction and forage shows a ramarkable " decrease, less than 1188, 00 bring the record for 1909 and over 8700,000 for 1908. Tha largest number of fires oc curred In Idaho, 981; but the great lacnsuw over 1808 Is that state namely,' 57S Is entirely attributed to r in the Coeur d'Alene, which wen extinguished without material damage. Locomotive sparks were accountable for 611 of the Mates In this fores last year. The explana tion of the Increase la the total for all forests Is to be found In thU Coeiir d'Alene Increase. The report of the Forester for 1808 said of the fire record of 190S: "That year was one of prolonged drought during the summer and fall, and of disastrous forest fires throughout the country. The Na tional Forests suffered relatively little.' About 232.191,000 board feat of ttmbor. or 0.08 per cent of the stand, was destroyed. A total of 1718 fires was reported, of which 108 were small fires confined as a rule to an area of five acres or less. The cost of firo fighting, exclusive of the salaries of forest officers, was TJ, 283.33. This sum, added to the proportion of tha total salaries of raugara and guards properly charge able to pntrol and lira fighting, wnn leas than one-twentieth of one per cant of the value of tho timber pro tected; estimated at an average stuaipage value of 82 per thouasml." Offsetting the unity of spirit that marks the co-operation In tho fight against the formation of "Nesmlth county," Kugene, piqued by its fall are to secure tho district fair this year, has fixed the time for holding the laae county fair on exactly the earn dates as thoeo previously de termined on in Roseburg for holding the district fair, September 20 to 24, Inclnatve. Before the meeting of the district commissioners adjourned In Roseburg, tho Eugene members of the board stated that the Lane coun ty fair would be held during the week Immediately preceding the one to he held at Roseburg. Their auh Bnquent chnngo of mind came as a great surprise to the Douglas county commissioners, and it hardly Insures a feeling of harmony at future meet ings of the board In case such meet ings are made necessary by failure of the legislature to dissolve the dls trlrt and make eepeiato approprln tlortK for the Counties at un-eont fotaorlslng it. An Invalid for ten long years, pro nounced Incurable by halt a dozen doctors, operated upon at one time for tumor, and, after finally giving up all hope, thinking a horrible can cer was slowly but surely eating away her verv life itself; then. In a short time being fully restored to health and happiness, doing all her own housework such Is the truly remarkable experience of Mrs. John Slevers, living on a ranch flue miles southeast of Winters, Cal. The sudden change In her condition was d e to the fact that she finally found physicians who knew what was the matter with her and the treatment required. Each and every case, be, it merely a cold, or any other disease affecting mankind, Is given the most careful attention by these masters of the medical profes sion. If, after a careful examina tion, they think a patient Incurable (which rarely but sometimes hap pens), they promptly tell the af flicted one the facts, and refuse to take the case under any circum stances. This is one of the inviolate rules of Fer-Don's Expert Medical Specialists, and has, in a great measure, contributed so largely to their phenomenal auccesa. Just read what Mrs. Slevers has to say: "For the past ten years I have suffered untold torture and agony with my stomach. During all this time I have had at least half a dosen different physicians, but none of them seemed to do me any good. I had severe hemorrhages, griping pains, and was operated upon by one physician who thought I had a tumor. At times I would just cry with pain, as It seemed almost un endurable. I had burning pains, and my stomach was so sore that I could not stand for anything to touch it. I had begun to think I was afflicted Mrs. A. It. ?med almost too good to be ti , as only tem porary relief was all that I expected, If I could even get that I would have been satisfied. However, they treated me, using no knife, and to day I am almost perfectly cured; the pains have all gone. I do all my own housework, and feel better than I have for ten years. "The cure they made on me Is very remarkable to my mind, be cause of the fact that I was so very 111, and had tried so many other physicians with such little success. "If there are any people hi my neighborhood, or anywhere else, for that matter, who would like to know about the treatment ol these special ists, If they will call on or write me I will gladly tell what they did In my caae.
