Probably the most remarkable lo comotive order In the history of rail roads is now being delivered to the Southern Pacific. It consists of 33 freight engines of the Mallet com pound type. Twenty-one of these are of the same size as the two which are now at work on the mountain division of the Southern Pacific. These engines weigh 200 tons, and are in fact two locomotives in one. A peculiar fact is that some of the railroads between the eastern works and the western destination refused to haul them over their tracks, fear ing both for the tracks and the bridges. Dcv-pite this fact the Southern Pacific ordered 20 locomo tives of this kind and weight, know ing that they were not especially hard" on track. Each of the monsters cost $30,000. WILL HE SLAUGHTERED. The Oregonian has taken a big contract in Its determination to wipe out the primary law and Statement One, There may be and probably should be an assembly next year to bring the several elements of the Republican party together, but the News hazards a guess that very few of the strong men of the party will be willing to go before the people with a "nomination" or even an in dorsement from that assembly. It Is noticeable that all the pronounced candidates are fighting shy of it, and if the old machine should pat its leaders forward they will be slaughtered like tenpins. A RETURN TO HOSS1SM. Woodburn Independent (Rep.). The comparative few who expouse the "assembly" plan will doubtless heed the wishes of and nominate the ticket selected by the Inner circle. It will be nothing more or less than a return to bossism and the first step toward the abolition of the di rect primary. Even the suggestion of an "assembly" Is a subterfuge.
