All ef forts last night and this morning fail ed to get trace of the three unmnBk- ed men who about six o clock last evening held up and robbed the East Side bank at the corner of Grand Av enue and East Washington streets, in this city. Their booty, consisting of nhout (17.000 In gold, silver um! currency, was dumped Into two sacks and enr- rled with them as they ran down the street and disappeared. Six shots were llred after them by II. S. New- hall, president of the bank, nnd his son, Roger Newhall, but none took effect. The police have searched ev ery part of the city but have discov ered no clew. Portland citizens are shocked at this hold robbery, being unable to understand how three rub bers could hold up the bank's presi dent nnd cashier right on the busiest thoroughfare on the east side of the river, with scores of pedestrians con stantly passing, and make good their escape. Persons poHlng saw the robber taking money from the New halls Inside the hank but did not real ize what was going on until the ban dits hnd Mown and their victims gave the alarm. One of todny'B developments in the case was the finding of the horse and buggy In which the robbers es caped. The outfit had been abandon ed somo dlstnnco from the bank, nnd nearby, In the mud, lay a roll of cur rency nmountlng to $200. The rob bers hired a rig at a slahle shortly heforo tho robbery. All Done In Two Minnies. Just two minutes were required to complete a robbery that has few pre cedents for desperation and daring. Entering tho bank. The leading spirit of tho robbery, a man of 38, smooth shaved and wearing seedy clothes, took all the desperate chances and did the nctual work of taking the money. Although heavy set and clumsy of appearance, he leaped through the teller's wicket wllh marked agility, forced the offi cials Into the privnto room, scooped the money through the wicket Into tho sncks held by one accomplice, leaped back into the corridor with his back to tho NewhallB and left tho bank only after the other two men were well clear of the door, each of them carrying a suck. He ran behind for a time, weapon in hnnd, evidently Intent on protecting the money-carriers from a rear lire.
