" ' Borne u6dful 'direction to t& follow ed in walking for health or pleasure are given by Professor Itlehard K. Nel Hgan of the department of hygiene at Amherst college In an article contrib uted to Country Life In America for July. Professor NelllKan says that It Is surprising how little Is generally known about the. proper carriage, stride and breathing in this form of exercise. The carriage and stride on a level country road differ, of course, from those that are best for a hilly country, and differences In build make it Impossible for all to walk alike, yet certain fundamental rules should Ikj followed as far as possible. These the writer proceeds to give In brief as fol lows: For ordinary wrtlklng on city streetB or good, level country roads the front upper client should b-j niiscJ In onk-r to give full play to the Iuiijjs and heart. Per sistent attention to this position of the tln-Ht, combined with Uf p breathing, will sue tiro tho formation of a most desirable habit find will naturally assist In keeping the shoulders In - their proper place. Hy this method a natural but not constrain ed position of the shoulders can be ac quired. The strldo should bo shorter and slower In lone distance walking than in short, lest t"o lontc and fnsl a stride cause ex haustion and destroy both the pleasuro and profit of tho exercise. For ordinary v.-alkltipc the mllltnry strldo of thirty Inches and iZO paces per minute Is about right for tho overuse mun and Is the re sult of much experience. For tall, active men and for speed purposes the military stride Is too short and slow, "and the pe destrian must use his own judgment and learn from experience. In races of from one to ten miles the writer, who Is five feet- eleven and three-fourths inches in height, frequently strode three feet nine inches at tho rate of 175 Bteps per minute. Some writers clnim that tho body should bo Inclined forward even when walking on level Kround, for the reason that this favors speed, giving the Indian's gait as an example. Others ciulrn that walking Is a series of falls from ono foot to the other, and IhereCoro for speed purposes it is necersary to lean forward. Sucli writers seem' in forget that tho momen tum Kained while going at tho rate of flvo miles nn h'uir is considerable, and if at the same time the body is inclined for ward It brings nn undue strain upon the hiuscles which were intended to hold the body erect. The lest argument against this Is" (hut the erect position favors a longer and faster stride when walking on level ground than Is possible in the bent position, ami. furthermore, -the upright position Is lews tiring. The best long and short distance walkers in the world, with very few 'exceptions, carry the body erect. The principal reason In favor of the upright position, Professor XelligaD tells us, .is the lessened strain on the large museluM In the bark and the con seipKMit saving of energy. Women especially should maintain .this position t obtain the best results. Iierthn von Hillcn. the greatest woman walker, was perfectly erect. To quote further: Tho main difference between tho long and short dlainnce walkers is in tho posi tion of the leg ns the heel .strikes tiie ground. In long di.iluttro walking thorn is more; action at the knees and less move ment ut the hi ib, and this res nil s in a Blunter stride. Tho knee is slightly bent in pome en h as the heel touches t lie ground, while in others tho knee In bent just after tt if straight leg loi.eli.s tho earl h. I'll her methed nf bending tho kneo relieves the jir and also the nervous strain caused by speed walking. For short distances nt-thu greatest pos sible speed, n in athletic competitions, tho leg in all cases intirit be straight and tho knee Htlff as the heej touches th ground, and the knee must remain stiff throughout the stride until the -heel of the following f.ti.i in phiced for the next stride. There is also a peculiar hip ac tion, known aniens raehvg men as the roll, which is very exhausting. Tho shoulders and arms are swung violently forward and upward, and thu wholo gait Is purely artiiicial and tiring, n-quirea long practice. Is not at all pleasing to witnesn and Is apt to thcenerale Into a very awkward run. Tic distinction be tween walking and running is t li.it In walking tho heel of the forward font must he pl;eed In position befort the toes of the r.ar foot leave the ground, whilo iu running li'dii feet are oil tho ground ut the same time.
