Albany Harold: Three yars ngo all the el 1 1 oh and towns of the Upper Willamette valley engaged In an tin reattunable rivalry. A citizen of Kit Kene couldn't talk fast enough to de ride Albany. Corvallls did tho aanie thing and Albany hurled back plenty of uncomplimentary epithets, All characterized Bulem aa "the sloweitt town lu Oregon." Kach town knoekud the other. Time nun proven that not one of them profited thereby. Today all the cities of the Upper Valley are animated by the spirit or progre-HH; are joined by the bond of common good. The knocking bun ceased. Albany Is willing to concede that Kugene has made wonderrm progress, that Corvallls Is doubling Its population and that Ralein Is In the forefront of tho progressive cities of tho state. But Albany la growing au fast as any of them and all are thriving in the light of the greatest era of progress which ever swept Western Oregon. Perhaps the cities have realized that the old system of rivalry doesu't lny. True, there Is a friendly spirit of rivalry yet. But the' knocking has stopped. If Albany can't get an en terprise it hopes some other Willam ette Valley city can. Jt will help de velop the whole valley and this city will get Its share of the common good. Tho spirit which animates the cities Is also becoming apparent among rival business men. It used to be the custom for a real estate man to discourage deals his compet itor was coiiHUinmntlug and often this resulted In a new industry or resi dent being lost to the city altogether. That custom is dlKappearlng and while there limy still he room for Im provement in this respect It is grati fying to record the fact that many land agents would must rather see a rival complete a deal than see a pros pective resident go to some other city.
