Keller, lu an article that woo a prize lu the swine eon t cut couducted by the American Agriculturist, says of hog breeding and management: As to breeds I may say all have their strong und weak points, and our thirty years' experience In bundling 100 to 200 hogs annually convinces me that a better feeding unlmal Is more fre quently secured by crossbreeding. This Is understood to mean the prog eny of pure bred parent stock. The character of the progeny of pure bred parents ran be foretold with a marked degree of certainty, but of crossbred parents not at all. The black breeds usually give tho hlgheHt grade meats with the least offal, but many of them have been bred for heavy points and consequently have lost fecundity. 1 find relief in this line by using Chester White, Du roc-Jersey or large York shir sows, which I And proline breed ers and excellent mothers. These ore bred to a thoroughbred Poland-China boar. A Poland-China boar and Berk shire how brings a very superior feed er. In crossbreeding It Is iwunlly advisable that the sow should be of the larger breed, as this gives freedom of parturition and great suckling abil ity. The dam should have good length, wide between uHer and lower body line, fair width, strong bone, set with straight Joints and not less than twelve well developed teats. A sow to be profitable should be able to prcduce two good Utters annual ly nud bring to weaning in good condl tlon an nverage of eight pigs to the Ut ter. Where n small herd Is kept and wa rin q uu r t ers prov Ided 1 a nd the early Alitn-b litters the most profitable, as they are large enough to get more out of the summer clover pasture, which Is the best and cheapest pig feed. The sows may be bred to fall farrow In August or September and the litter get a good start before win ter sets In. To carry very small pigs over winter Is seldom prolltnhle. Where several hundred pigs are to be handled t!iu furrowing Hhould be deferred till the latter purt of April or first of May unless the most perfect housing and artificial warmth are provided. Even then, on account of tack of exercise for the little pigs, the fatality Is consider able. I breed ut one time ns near as 1 can and even up the small litters with the surplus of the large ones. The parent stock should be In fair flesh and good health at time of mat ing to Insure strong, healthy Utters. The dam should have exercise during tho period of gestation this Is very Important und she should be In good flesh at farrowing, as she will endure the drill ii on her system better during the suckling period and curry the Utter to weaning In better shape. Her win ter feed had best be of a tissue form ing, laxatlvu nature. Mill foods, roots Held peas, soy beans, clover leaves, with an occasional dash of corn, are excellent. Hear In mind that the sow must be well fed during the period of gestation to secure best results. Tiro eow should be placed in her fnr rowing quarters a few days previous to this event, so she will become ac quainted with her surroundings. She should be fed sparingly on scalded bran slops at this time to cool out and regulate the system and after farrow ing should be given only tepid watci or a very thin gruel for the first twen ty-four hours. Overfeeding at this crit ical period Is fatal to the litter by se riously deranging the system of the A 11KHKSIUHB CHAMPION. lOhunipton I'olfind-Chtna boar. sow. Add to the feed gradually till on full feed in ten or twelve days. If the sow Is very lestless at time of farrow ing, remove the pigs carefully as they appear and return as soon as farrow ing ceases. In most cases It Is better to leave the sow entirely alone, and In case of extreme cold weather provide sulllclciit Iteddlmr so she may burrow lu It and her bodily heat prevent chill ing of the litter. The plgn will show a disposition to eat ut three weeks old and should be encouraged to do so by providing a creep where shelled corn ami sweet milk are to I had. Hy the time they are eight weeks ld they should be on full feed and weaning take place without check to thrift or growth Never give the dam during the suc kling perlinl amir or stale feed. This will derange the systems of the lit ter, causing dlssentery ami stunted growth. Tacts About floats. Coats do not eat grass as long as there are weeds and brush. Be as careful as you can you will occasionally take cold, and. when you do, get a medicine of known re liability, one that has an established reputation, one that Is certain to ef fect a quick cure. Such a medicine Is Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It has gained a world wide reputation by Its remarkable cures of this most common ailment. It acts on nature's plan, relieves the lungs, aids expec toration, opens the secretions and aids nature in restoring the system to a healthy condition. During the many years In which it has been In general use we have yet to learn of a single case of cold or attack of the grip having resulted In pneumonia when this remedy was used, which shows conclusively that It Is a certain pre ventive of that dangerous disease. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy con tains no opium or other narcotic and may be given as confidently to a baby as to an adult. For sale by Hamil ton Drug Co. G. 11. Ilurlians Testifies After 4 Years O. B.
