Extracts from a letter In tho Sep tember Issue of the llomlletlc Re view, by itev. EgldluB Kellinayer, of TltiiBVllle, N. J.: "It may seem Innocent enough Just to belong or hold to a Chrlstless creed, and It may bo urged that a man might hold to whatever he pleases, so long as he does not op pose. But ChrlHt never looked upon It In that way. Ho says, 'Ho that Is not with me Is against me." Per sonally, I will say, and say It ear nestly, I could not vote for any man to be tho leader of this people If I knew that that man knew not the leadership of Christ Jesus. A man, I caro not what all his other quali fications may he, who Is not governed and dominated by tho teachings of the Word of (lod, Is not, no, not for an Instant, calculated to govern this great and Cod-made nation. "Never has thlB county been given such a choice as she will have pre sented to her at tho coming elec tion. It will not he a choice mere ly between republicanism and and democracy, with their various plat forms and policies; It will ho a choice between a man dedicated, not only to his country, but to Cod and Ills Christ, on the one hand, and a man who Is dedicated to nothing, for a man who does not accept Chrlflt as the Revelation of Cod disputes that Revelation, and a man who dis pute's that can not be said to be dedi cated to anything excepting the pow ers of darkness. "If over tho Church of Christ was called upon to show her allegiance to her Master, It will bo at the next election. If ever the sacred ministry had an opportunity to exhibit real and grand generalship for their Master It will be during tho time in tervening now nnd the olectlou. Brethren, let us lay aside prejudice, parly prejudice, let us forget all things else, and hit us remember on ly this one tiling, that our Master and Ills cause are being put to the lest before the greatest nation on earth, and that we can not afford, nn, not if we have to sacrillce our fath ers' political heritage, to take sides with lii in or those who do not count Christ as tho factor In all national Issues." AgL Portland, Oregon WUhi I Ll liui HAS WITNESSED And II Came Under the High Pro too tlve Tariff and Republican Con trol In Every Branch of the Federal Govern ment. Ib a public address. Mr. Shaw, re tntly Socrotary of the Treasury un 'er Mr, Roosevelt, said: "The strin gency of 1937 Is generally conceded to have been the severest the world hai ever witnessed." How consoling It Is to read In th republican pl 'tf -rm this glowing sen tence: "A Republican tariff has al ways been followed by business proa perlty." Mr. AH rich. In his speech on the A Id rich Currency bill In the Senate of (he United States only last wluter, said: "Mr. President, the financial crlsli from which the country has Jusl emerged, which culminated In a serious oanlo In October, was the most acute and deetructlve In Ite Immediate con tequences of any that has occurred In the history of the country. Nothing but the heroic measures taken by the representatives of the great business and financial Institutions of the coun try acting In co-operation with the Secretary of the Treasury, prevented a total collapse of private credit and a disastrous. destruction of all values The country was saved by the nar rowest possible margin from an over whelming catastrophe, whose blight Ing effect would have been felt In every household." On Februray 11, 1908, Mr. Shaw, In a speech he made In Michigan, said: "Over 300.000 freight cars are stand Ing on the tracks, 30,000 locomotives white leaded and out of commission, one-fourth of the population of several large cities Idle, and for the first tlm under a Republican administration, free soup houses In every industrial center; the price of farm produce nat urally and materially depreciated furnish an object lesson which ought to produce a measure of sobermlnd ed iiess on the part of the American people." From tho public press Is taken thi following news Uc:q coming from Pittsburg, Pa.. Feb. 8, 1U08: "The cry of the unemployed dally grows more distressed In Pittsburg There are 15,000 men Idle, and the spectre of the dreaded soup housei again makes its appearance, Tho Aral soup house will be opened by the Sal vatlon Army Monday morning, aud unless there Is a radical and prompt change for the better, more places ol this kind will be In demand befor-i many days have elapsed. The sltua tlon Is not really alarming, but It If bad enough. Soup houses have been the dread of the business men ami civic leaders, and every effort has been mado to avoid them." Here la the following news Item from Chicago, dated Feb. 11, 1908: "Chicago. Feb. 11. 1908. Never In the history of the 'Chicago Relief and Aid Society' has there been such a domand for assistance as at the pres ent time. Is the claim of Superlnten dent Klugsly, who Is In charge of the distribution of funds by the business men's relief committee, which has Just raised between $25,000 and $30,000 fot needy families. Never In the history of the society have we had eo many appeals baed entirely on the lack ol employment." Not long ago Mr. Dalzell, who wrltoi the tariff tax. recently as dictated by the men who put up the money to py the expenses of republican campalgus told us: "We do not read our tariff lessons out of books. We read them by thu blatlng light of open furance doora. amid the noise of Industrial aetlvltbu and In the sweat of our brows that we coin Into wealth, and God Ivdp the man or party that would put out these Area, still he music of that nol:e. and send the workmen home to a food lest and hungry household. "It was under republican rule ttrtt this music was stilled, that the fires were put nut, and that soup housei had to provide for the food less and hungry." No longer can any Republican ever fool the people by claiming that 'a republican tariff has always been fol lowed by business prosperity. The time has come the hour has struck for a change. Thousauds of Republicans take thflr positions and will vote for Bryan In November. OAILT WEATHER REPORT V-9. Wettber Bureau, local uttlcv, Rutcburg . Ore. a huum eudirg 6 a. m. Nov. t, inoa. Many were frightened Into hys terics, women hugging their children and uttering wild shrieks. One man telephoned to' Pittsburg, bidding his relatives goodbye. As the moon rose higher, the sil ver light turned gradually to orange and then to deep red, which alarmed thoBe who gazed at It.
