Hoclnllst Lewis netting N'ulorli'l) Wherever Ho Uim, E. J. LewU, the "distlUKulshed1 SoclallHt orator and former "hobo" who Bpoke or rather raved recent ly on the streets of RoeoburK, con tinues to gain the notoriety which he Is constantly seeking. Falling In his deserate effort to break Into Jail In Roseburg, LewlB went to Corvallls and, after making the customary nui sance of himself, got Into the col umns of the Corvallls Gazette, which prints the following: "The "Jlnt" debate at the court house between Socialist I .owls and a college student, afforded fine sport on Monday night. Packed by a loyal squad of rooter companions from O. A. C, the student spread the good old gospel of republicanism all around the socialistic brother. Like a bantam rooster he plucked the lull feathora from tho old Plymouth Rock, who had been on the Btrectn for several days thirsting for blood, and the bantam hnd the last crow." Previous to his last visit to Rose burg (we were honored twice by his presence), Lowls visited Grants Pass, among other towns south of hero and, as usual,' did more harm than good for the socialist 'cause, as the following communication from Coun ty Judge Stophen Jewell, of Joseph ine County, (o a Grants Pass news paper Bhows: "Editor , Courier: A fair Blzec audience gathered at the Court House last Wednesday evening to hoar a Socialist sjmoch from a man by the name of LewlB, but were very much disappointed, as it turned out to be a wholesale slandering ol George Washington, Abraham Lin coln, W. J. Uryan and Stephen Jew ell. Georgo Washington waB repre sented as a liar and a land thief, Ab raham Lincoln au the tool of east' ern manufacturing monopolies ant W. J. Uryan and Stephen Jewell wert represented as being engaged In mak ing gamblers and prostlttiteB. O! course, I did my duty and called him down when I thought that he hnd reached the limit. "Why this two-legged brute should have Included me In his list Is hurt) to understand, as I had Just ver courteously granted him the use ol the court house. Hut I think tint' there are enough gentlemen in tht Socialist club to make duo public ap ology for the Insult that was offered. I think that there was not more thaii halt a doien of his audience who were depraved enough to npplaui1 this cowardly attack on docent poo pie. "Any roan who would call In nueB tlon the moral cleanliness of Tart Itryun or Dobs should be called down Immediately, let hlR mission be what it may. 8TKP11KN JKWBLL.' MIW. IIOTK1N IN I'HIHON.
