James Schoolcraft Shoriuan, congroBaman, republican candidate for the vice uresldoncy and Utlca's moBt fiimouB and honored citizen, is today cele brating his f3rd birthday. Mr. Sherman graduated from Hamilton College In 1878 and two years luter wna admitted to the bar. In 1882 he was made secretary of the republican commrtteo of hiB county and In 1884 he was chosen mayor of Utfca by the largest majority ever given a mayoralty candidate In that city up to that time. In 1886 he was elected to congress. He waB renomi nated In 1888, but was defeated and again was an unsuccessful candidate In 1890. Two years later, however, he was elected and continued to rep resent his district until the present year, when ho declined renomination to accept the Becond place on the re publican ticket with Mr. Tart. Mr. Sherman was a delegate to the repub lican national convention In 1892. and chnlrmnn of the New York re publican etnte convention In 1895 and again In 1900. TABLET TO I'ATWOTIC WOMEN. RALEIGH. N.
