brating his f3rd birthday.
Mr. Sherman graduated from
Hamilton College In 1878 and two
years luter wna admitted to the bar.
In 1882 he was made secretary of the
republican commrtteo of hiB county
and In 1884 he was chosen mayor of
Utfca by the largest majority ever
given a mayoralty candidate In that
city up to that time. In 1886 he was
elected to congress. He waB renomi
nated In 1888, but was defeated and
again was an unsuccessful candidate
In 1890. Two years later, however,
he was elected and continued to rep
resent his district until the present
year, when ho declined renomination
to accept the Becond place on the re
publican ticket with Mr. Tart. Mr.
Sherman was a delegate to the repub
lican national convention In 1892.

and again In 1900.

a memorial tablet commemorating
tho "Edenton Tea Party" of 1774
was unveiled today In the rotunda
of tho State Capital. The exercises
wore held under the auspices of the
North Carolina society, Daughters of
the American Revolution.
The tnblet is In commemmoratlon
of the action of tho 51 women of
Kdenton, North Carolina, who Ami
defied tho mother country In October.
1774, by declining to uho any more
tnxed tea. Tho tablet Is sultubly in
scribed nnd lit the center bears the
figure of a tea pot and also an etch
ing of the house In Kdenton in which
the patriotic ladicB met.

were allocked to hear of the sudden
death of Mrs. Jas. Hull, an esteemed
resident of this place. Mra. Hull had
been In ixmr health for the past two

cently, but was thought to be Im
proving until Sunday evening, when
she was taken violently III nnd lived
but a few hours. Her death was at
tributed to heart failure. Mrs. Hull
was 6 2 years of age. she is survived
