Portland1 Jury (liven I'lulntlff Much Mora Tlinn Mi' Asked For. PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 20. A ver dict $6,166.67 greater than the plain tiff nuked for is the surprising result In the case of J. C. Drynnt, repre sentative-elect, and P. C. Whltten, against M. C. Oriswold. The verdict was recolved by Judge Morrow about midnight last night after a trial last ing three days, and now the lawyers are wondering what the effect will be Bryant and Whltten Bued for $10,(100 commission on the salo of timber lands In Lane county. This Is all they will be able to recover, and there appears to be some doubt as to whether or not the verdict Is wholly valid. Robert Treat I'latt, who won, said ho did not know what the effect of the unusual von lot will be, and R. W. Montague, who, with John M. Qearln, represented the de fendant', wna also uncertain, but thought the whole verdict would fall. The' jury apparently took a differ ent theory of the caso of the plain tlff. The court had pointed out this othor' theory during the course of the "trial, and the Jury evidently "took a chance" In that direction. The defense has secured 10 days In which to move for a new trial and also to move for setting aside the ver dict as1 inconsistent with the findings on special Issues. EUGENE nHOMVKS PUNS. On the word of James Schoolcraft Bhermnn, lt(publicfln vice prenideutlal candidate, full responsibility for con ITCHd' failure to enact many needed laws must be assumed by tlie Hepub II can party. April 8, 1008. In the house, as printed In the Congreaalonal Keeord, Iteprc tentative Duvid A. Dc Armond, of MlMourl, said: "When the quentlon Is askrd any where In the country and It will be asked why was not this mtuftitro co n side ml, why was not that man ure passed, why wns not the other measure brought up? there Is one an swer, and only one: lie cn use the Ito publican majority la this houna willed that It should not he connldcred. should not ho brought up, should not he paused. We can stund iion that ref old. It Is well known that there s pressure In the country, and very great pressure, for the consideration and pasmie of a number of Important measures. It Is well known that a large majority of the voting strength of the country Is Insistent upon the consideration and the passage of '.m porta nt measures. Do not go to theui again, as you have done so often ami io successfully, and endeavor to de hide them Into the belief that some Iiow you could not get consideration for the measure and somehow you could not pas It. You can have con 1 deration, because you have the pow ?r to enforce It; and, so far as meritori ous measures are concerned, as lin been demonstrated here more than once and will be demonstrated again and abundantly demonstrated, you have only to express the will, you have only to give the opportunity, mid If you lack the votes upon that aide, as you do .not, there will be an abundant addition here.' Sherman Admits It. The same day, replying, Mr. Sher man said: "The gentleman from Missouri In timates that the Republican side of the house desires to do away with the roll calls because of wme fear of making i record upon some question bi fort the house. Mr. Speaker, the Hepubllc an party In the house, the Ilcpubllcan party In this nation, Is prepared today to accept full responsibility, not only for everything that Is done, but for that which Is not done In the way of legislation and administration.
