Conditions are Pronounced Inex- celled by nil Kxpert. PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 19. Hon. F. H. Scrlbner, president of the Wis consin Huttermnkers' Association, hut more especially honored In the Pacific Northwest as the breeder of "Loretta D" (belonging to the W. 8. Lndd Estate, Portland, Or.) the cow that won first prize in the hundred nnd twenty day milking test at the St. Louts exposition In 1904, has said: "There is no Bpot In our great United States thai can excel Oregon and Washington In dairying. This is my conclusion after speudlng six weeks in the former state and thor oughly investigating several of her beautiful valleys, and after an ex tended trip through Washington. I wish to sny to the dairymen and farm era of this section, relative to Us dairy possibilities, that I fear they don't fully appreciate the wonderful opportunity here for the raising of feeds best adapted to the dairy in dustry, and the excellent climatic conditions for the growth and devel opment of stock. You should here reach the climax of productiveness." Mr. Scrlbner'B Wisconsin farm of eighty acres supports, under his skilled management, ninety ' head of stock. POINTS ON THE PIG. 8om, Notes For Breeders That Aro Worth Rememherirg. Pigs that mature early are the ones for profit when well cared fur. Wood charcoal, wood ashes and salt should be accessible at all times. The greatest profit of the dairy con stant In converting the byproducts luto pork. ' Don't let the hogs have access to ' dirty or filthy water holes. 1 Olre them salt often, also plenty of fresh water dally. Never use a scrub male and theu ex pect a fine Utter from a good bow. Oats fed to bows during pregnancy, by sowing them broadcast on the ground. Increase size of the uuboru pig. also helping to keep the sow unci litter In good condition. A mixture of wheat and barley Is more valuable food for growing pigs than corn alone. Ground wheat and corn give better feeding results than ground wheat and rye. The-.proflt In feeding young pigs Is with those that are not stinted In their food. More pigs are underfed than are over fed. Soaking meal does not produce as great a gain In feeding value ns soak ing whole grain. Economical feeding Is not how much they eat, but what they usslnillalo. Keep the herd free from lice by fre quent applications of kerosene emul sion, or Minor's duld mixed with water and sprayed on thein. or by dipping If you have a tank. For small pigs use a half barrel to dip them In. ALFALFA HOG FEEDER. Even more successful than former displays was the Eighth Uleunlnl Fruit Fair at Hood River. A very large delegation went, from Portland by Bpecial train on Saturday. Harper's Weekly is planning a ser ies of nrtlcles on the Pacific North west to appear in early Issue, and J. K. Mumford, one of America's most prominent magazine writers, is personally gathering the data now. "If the community wants to get desirable Immigration It's certainly within the province of the ministers to help" Ib an idea that promises to hear fruit In ninny Northwestern towns most active In presenting their claims to tho country at large. Hogs are very fond of alfulfa, and they will eat a good deal of it if given a chance. They will also waste a whole lot unless you stand and feed It to them a handful at a time. A rack with a swinging front works very well, says a writer In the Farm Press. The punching the hogs give It will work the buy down within reach until the rack is empty. The openings In front Bhould be large enough to let a hog's head through, but not much larger. The rack may be any length and should be about four feet high and from three feet to three nnd n hnlf feet wide nt the top. Make It strong or they will soon punch it to pieces Make the floor tight to hold chaff and lay a floor In front to keep the hogs out of the mud. Brood sows fed all tho good n I fulfil hoy and clean water they want will winter very well If given one good ear of corn each duy. The Birth Stone for October Is the ...OPAL,... It Is not best to permit the boar to run with the herd. There are good reasons why this should not be done. If you are to control the time of far rowing and want to control the boar It can be done only when he Is kept by himself. It Is a too commou prnctlce to sell the boar when the season Is over rather than keep him for future pur poses, depending on getting another when be Is needed. This Is a ruinous practice nnd Is largely the cause of so many small litters and weak honed pigs. From years of experience I bllve learned that It Is best to get n good boar and keep him for a few years As he matures his pigs will be strong er and mure In number. Hnve a small yard of gruss. If pos sible, hog tight and away from the sows, so he will not be worried. A quarter of an acre will afford plenty of exercise Ut the open nir. When grass Is not nvnlhible give him cut clover or any giod green feed he will eat. Feed sparingly of fattening foods, but supply him with food that will keep him growlug If not fully developed Mill stuff, sklmmllk. clover, ntfnlfa or anything that furnishes protein Is advisable. And at all times keep a supply of ashes, salt and charcoal where he can obtain It nt will, nnd It will do much toward keeping hi in In good health. W. H. FlHHKIl, riw. J. U. BOOTB. Vlc-r. J.
