of Deninurk.
The machine Is a combination of
the telephone and the phanogrnph,
only the phonograph principle is en
tirely new. The record, Instead of
being tangibly made by the impres
sion of a neddle on wax, is made by
means of magnetism on steel. The
vibrations of speech, which, traveling
over a wire and reproduced In a re
ceiver, and which make the tele
phone possible, are In this case
cunght and held on to a steel plate
by magnetism.
It is the discovery of the possi
bility of the localization ot magnet
Ism that made thiB possible. The re
sult is that the phonographic record
Is not on the surface of the plate,
but Is a part of It, not to be eradi
cated even with a file. Once made,
all that is necessary is that a con
luctor of magnetism should pass
the plate and the vlnrations of the
voice are reproduced. The voice, thus
heard, has much more of the human
quality than In the monograph. Ev
;iry shade of expression, each note of
feeling is reproduced. But all that
.a necessary to eradicate the spoken
uossnge from the record Is to spenk
another message on top of it. The
last message wipes out, as It were,
the first one and records Itself In
the vacant place.
.The distance at which this machine
may be successfully operated Is lim
ited only by the same limitations that
affect the telephone. Attached to the
telephone, It Is possible, with this
lUachlne, that when a man Is out of
his office, those calling'him up may
leave their message, speaking It into
the 'phone just as if he were there.
When the man comes back he can
pick up his receiver and hear one
or a dozen messages that may have
been left during his absence.

ptomaine, the product of the microbe

Baker Vlty Mayor Advises Citizens

BAKKR CITY. Or., Oct. 8. This
city has been vIkIU'U by a series of
incendiary llres which threaten the
property of the citizens to such an
extent that there are special patrol
men employed and great effort is be
ing made to locate or capture the
firebugs.
Tuesday night there were three
llres, cue the old Kaull residence, un
occupied, but a historic old build
ing. It was furnished originally by
Sloune, of New York. The loss was
about $'i000.

after the old creamery property went
up In smoke.
Yesterday and Inst night there
were three more flres of Incendiary
origin. The matter became so ser
ious that Mayor Johns issued last
evening the following proclamation;
