Tfce tim if alrcof-t at iaxid ba appJe etbniL? will be Ui main work on tie fruit farm a&d oa many ordinary farm, too. for almost erery rood farm baa apptea to fcal&cr arid store for winter oa. Tfcere ire t erai important ooitiu that all sbou)4 a a demand. Gathering. The special time when each rariety ia in the proper condi tion to gather is a Tery tenons ques tion. Not ooJy do tie varieties dif fer tot tee seasons as veil, wo that no set rule can be laid dove that will always apply with rood effect. There are frequent mistakes made by gath ering too early and also too late. There have been very careful experi ments conducted for several yart in succession to determine at what stage of maturity, as indicated by color, where this is powrible. apple would keep the beet. The result hat been In favor of those that were left on the trees until well colored rather than before that period. pro Tided they were at once put in a very cool storage room or in cold storage Apples that were gathered when quite immature, or even moderate) so. have often been badly affected i with barred scald. That is. they have become discolored by being mottled with a brows colored disease of the akin. This is at first not ex tensive, but gradually becomes worst and worse, as the winter progrease and often seriously damages tbe fruM for sale and finally rots it. Tbe roor Immature the apples were when gath ered the worse this trouble bat been. In cold storage this Is espee tally bad. If apples are left ontil they ar fully ripe, so as to be good eatiut before they are gathered, they wll not keep well. Tbe process of rip ening can not then be arretted bu' allgfatly even In cold storage Therefore, the lesson la. allow win ter apples to get good color b(-lor gathering and yet not let them be come fully rli. In the central and southern states there ia far mort difficulty in tellinjc un when thii medium stage has been reached thai In the north, and tbe warm autumr days ripen the apples fast. There i ample opportunity for tbe exercise of the best judgment that can be must ered in gathering winter apples. Storing. Another important point about handling winter apples In th torlng. That they should be rushed from the trees to the atorage room is the really vital point. Kiperlmentt have been made with the greatest care to determine tbe facts as thei really exist and they have proted that even a few days' delay In warrr air off the trees has a materially In jurious effect, and much more than If left on the trees. In the experi ments by the government experts tbia waa tried repeatedly by taking part of the fruit off tbe same trees and leaving It out of storage during short and long perloda and no room for doubt was left as to the need of quickly putting apples In storage. The temperature at which applet keep best is It degrees Fahrenheit This la Just the freeing point for water and It might be thought'that apples will freeie and be Injured but they will not. The water In them Is mixed with other subsumes thai prevent It from forming Into rrys tala or. in short, freeilng. Farmers can rarely provide such cold stor age, but apples will keep well In any cool room. Cellars are very often too warm In the fall when' apples are gathered and If nut in t . are apt to rl-n last or berln rotting I ine doors should be kepi r.K-n at night and closed during the dav which will help to k p a low tem perature. This should be done with any apple storage room where arti ficial cooling Is not practiced When severely cold weather begins and even then It I. wonderful how n.u.h of It is beneflt-lal. Iiampnes. In a cold storage ro.,m Is all right and orevents evaporation and wilting of apples, provided the temperature la low. if th, ,lr damp and warm there win r, from the gro.th of germ, of dls. which cause It Packing In tightly headed barrels or close boxes as s..n as apple, are gathered and sorted ln:o the pr..iT grade.
