Staley this year upon the Southern Pacific Compuny'B 11(1.15 miles of road bed, together with rolling stock, In Douglas county. It is an Increase of H.2.rj() per mile over the assess ment of 1907. Mr. Stuley explains that the in crease is made to meet a propor tionate raise In the vuluo of other classes of property . lu 1SU7, Mr. Staley says, the 8. P. Company's railroad property, while advanced very materially in valuation, did go so far in proportion us other property, so this year. 111 compiling valuations, he is putting tho railroad property further ahead and udvunclng the property of other taxpayers only slightly In order to equalize the assessment as a whole. Timber lands, which were raised tho highest of any class of property in 11)07, will remain at the same valua tion this year, while on other hold ings the average advance will not ex ceed live per cent. Mr. Stuley has no fear but that he can make the increased valuation of the Southern Pacific Company'B railroad property stick. Under the new law which compels railroads to report annually to the state rail road commission on the vnluo of tholr holdings, the Southern Pacific company in 1907 pluced the value of its Oregon road bed at over $!i9, 000. or over $19,000 higher than Mr. Stnley's assessment. With this Increased levy on Its road bed and rolling Block, coupled with tho levy that will be made on its land hold ings, tho Southern Pacific Company, it is estimated, will pay about one third of tho county tux for this year. Passes 1,000 Mark lu Tying Nuptial Knots 08 Per Cent Stick. am. JERSEY CITV, N. J., Oct. 2. The Rev. Gotlleb Adras, the "marrying parson" of Jersey City, who in the last quarter of a century has caused 2000 loving hearts to beat as 1000, will tomorrow celebrate his own sil ver wedding anniversary. Recently he performed the 1000th ceremony In his long career of tying nuptial knots and he confidently expects that he will reach the 2000 mark before his career as first assistant to Cupid Ib ended. Mr. Andras begun his own married lire on October 3, 1883. "Al ready presents are beginning to pour In upon him and his wire in antlcl-: patlon ot tomorrow's anniversary, j many or them coming from appreclat ive couples whom he married. The "marrying parson" has de rived an Income of about $10,000 from the matrimonial eplsoders In which he has figured, showing that the average sum received rrom each happy groom was $10. A rew im pecunious or stingy bridegrooms have paid only a dollar or two, some have paid nothing at all, and the highest fee he has ever reecived was $25. The majority pay from $5 to $10, but enough have paid more than the latter sum to bring the aver age up to about $10. Owing to the passage of a marriage license law In New York, many coupleB from the metropolis now come to Jersey City to be married and a large portion of thein are taken by the "cabbies" to the Rev. Mr. Andras. The "marrying parson" Is pastor of the German Reformed church, and preaches every Sunday to a congre gation of 700. During the last quarter-century, he has officiated at 1, (i'J4 baptisms and at 1257 funerals. Unlike the Oklahoma parson, who recently delivered an address In New York In which he declared that only one married couple In eight achieve happiness, the Rev. Mr. Andras Ib optimistic. He gives it as his belief that 98 per tent or the marriages at which he has officiated have turned out happily. Says the "marrying parson ; "I believe the men and women of today marry at too enrly an age. A man should wait until he is at least 25 and a woman until she Is 23. The women nre erenter offenders In this respect, tor the men have gained a worldly knowledge before their sis- ters have learned how to wash the ' dishes. A woman at 20 knows noth- j ing. "A man should marry as often as ; he finds it necessary. I mean he j should never be without a helpmate, j Divorces should not be sought pro- j mlscuoiiBly, but while man remains fallible, perfection in that regard caii' not be expected." 1 iJ-j if iS 45 5 sv 20 Coprriaht 1906 The noma ol Kuppi Chicago Very Comfortable for these Evenings GASOLINE, ENGINE OIL and supplies for Automobiles and Gasoline Engines H.
