From dally comments of casual observers It Is evident that for a dry town the acquisition of "booze" is becoming too frequent and easy In Roseburg. Rumor says -that Sat urday night carousals are of almost as unfailing regularity as during the days when saloons were In regular and lawful operation. Nor is it on Saturduy nights nione that there Is evidences of something stronger than near beer" being drank. Along this line the Inst issue of the Oily .News says: Two of Roseburg's promising young men paraded our streets yesterday Sunday filled to the brim with tho beverage that, by a majority of nearly 600 at the last election, is "supposed" to be a thing of the past in our beautiful little city, unless pre scribed by a regular physician for his patients. Hut since tho town "went dry" there seems to be an unlimited number of these "patients." In fact the "dry ness" has had a very bad ef fect on many and whether they nre traveling under the "sick ban" or getting the liquor from the "blind pig" funnel is a question for some one else to answer. Tho News does not know that a "blind lg" exists In Roseburg but we do know Unit there Is a whole lot of tho genuine old "dope" of a very advanced vintago being dispens ed In this city.. That Its effect on the Imbiber in fully up to the stundard Is witnessed by the "staggering Bnmplcs" exhibited on our streets at very frequent Intervals of late. To use a slang phrnao, "There's some thing rotten In . Denmark" (perhnps in Roseburg) re garding the sale of liquor, and It is about tlnio a thorough In vestigation was being made as to where all this fluid is com ing from. ' Tliere Is certainly a big "leak" somewhere. The foregoing Ib not reproduced for the purpose of making any crit icism thereon. It seems to show the present stnlus of affairs from the News point of view. It does ulve rise to a query, which seems espec 'ally pertinent nt this time. It be- ng generally reported that the nrn- hlbltlon Inw Is being frequently dis regarded in Itoschurg of late, It would seem that the News would give Its special friends. CHICAGO, Sept. 29. Rev. S. A. Dennis, pastor of the Methodist Kplscopal church of Hegewlsch, to dny startled the temperance com mittee of the Rock River conference when he declared that the salvation of Hegewlsch must be achieved through the conversion of "Battling" Nelson, champion lightweight pugil ist of the world, who owns the place body and soul. The astounded committee, seeR- ing enllghtenement, learned from Mr. OenniB that the advent or the "Battler" 111 his home village was Bufnclent to cause the abandonment of business by everybody except the thrifty saloon-keepers. "If 'Battling' Nelson were to be come a Methodist," sUf Mr. Dennis, "every man, woman and child In the place would forthwith join the church. I have proyed unremitting ly for the conversion of the Battler. I believe he is the most decent fellow that ever was in the prizefighting business. t. A CURE FOR RHEUMATISM Rheumatism is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, which is carried thiouh the circulation to all portions of the system. Every muscle, nerve, bone and joint absorbs the acrid, pain-producing poison, causing nches, inflammation, stillness nnd other well known symptoms of the disease. Permanent relief from the pains and discomfort of Rheumatism cannot be expected from the use of liniments, plasters, and other external treatment which does not reach the blood, where the cause is located. Such measures t;ive temporary relief, but in order to cure Rheumatism the uric acid and inflammatory poison must be expelled from the blood. S. ii. S. cures Rheumatism because it is a perfect blood purifier. It goes down into the circulation, neutralizes the uric acid and drives it from the blood. S. S. S. expels the irritating, inflammatory matter which is causing the pain, swell ing and other discomfort, enriches the weak, sour blood, and permanently cures Rhenmatism. In all forms of Rheumatism, whether acute or chronic, S S. S. will be f'Mind a safe, vegetable remedy, possessing the properties needed to cure, and nt the same time a medicine that builds up the entire system by its fine tonic c licet s.
