Hav ing completed an 8x10 foot shaft at Scott's Mltbu last evening, miners reached a five-foot vein of coal about 800 feet below the surface. Hun dreds of people witnessed the last carload of dirt which covered the ex cellent vein of coal, as It was taken up out of the shaft. There is much rejoicing over the company's suc cess in developing what gives promise or being a valuable property. A little more than a year ago prospecting was commenced at Scott's Mills and so well pleased was the company with its findings after having sunk a drill several hundred feet that no hesitancy was manifest ed in the expenditure of nearly $50, 000 in the development of the prop erty, and today the mine is well- equipped with all necessary machin ery. Experts are confident that the vein extends several miles back in the mountains and are certain that they have developed one of the rich est coal mines in this part of Oregon. Another drill was sunk a few weeks ago on the Abiqua river near this city by the same company and this will be developed as soon as the Scott's Mills mine Is well under progress. It Is believed that the vein near Sllverton can be reached at a less depth than that at Scott's Mills.
