The notice sent to Mr. Althaus reads us follows: "Sell no more gasoline on Sunday beeuuse of Sunday closing law. We are going to enforce It." The letters received by the other husim-Hs men are of substantially the same language, save that they refer to soft drinks. The one sent to Mr. Mathews was made a little more em phatic than any of the others, as tho sender had drawn a picture of a jail in one corner, for feur, peril ups. the recipient might not understand the full significance of the warning. The identity of the "League" is left to conjecture. None of the men who received Its notices are able to state positively who Is so vigilant In behalf of the Sunday closing law, but they, of course, have their suspicions. Men Fast Sixty In Danger. I am sure that examination of the facts bearing on the Oklahoma situa tion" will Indicate thnt guarantee of deposits Is the plan the country has been looking for. A National Hunker's Testimony. After the piuiantee plan had been In force In Oklahoma for a. time. s. H. Hurnhnm, president of the Lin coln, Neb., First National bank, wrote to O. J. Fleming, president of the Knld, Okla., National bank. Mr. Durnham opposed guarantee of de posits. Ho told Mr. Fleming that he desired the facts. Mr Fleming gave 'hem. He told about the increase In the deposits of the guaranteed banks of about $2,000,000 since the law had gone Into efTeet and the decrease of between $"O0,00O and $1,000,000 In the deposits of national banks, which were not permitted by the comptroller of the currency to parti cipate in the guarantee offered by the state law. . In other words there was nn In crease of $2,000,000 in deposits of one class of banks and a decrease of less than $1,000,000 In another class, or a net gain of at least $1,000,000 In the total bank deposits of the state. Opponents of the guarantee" have represented that this increase came from deposits sent in from neighbor ing states. In part this was true. But read Mr. Fleming's written testimony as to whence came most of the Increase. He wrote thus the Lincoln, Neb., banker: Ttrought Old shoe lloxes. "One man came into our bank with nn ordinary shoe box. He brought It Into the private office of our bank and asked us to open it and count the contents. We found the sum of $1,450 done np In little rolls of $100 each, tied with an or dinary string. This money bore nil the evidence of having been burled. Ppon another occasion a farmer sold his farm for $4800 cash, and at the time of sale he came Into our bank and was intending to take the pro ceeds of the sale nil in cash. After I explained to him the new hanking laws of Oklahoma, which gave to de positors a protection not afforded by any other state, of which he had never heard, he immediately conclud ed to leave his money on deposit with us. The amount Is still on de posit In our bank at this time. On nnother occasion a widow sold her farm in our county and removed to Colorado. She said she desired to have her money left. With us, as she knew the banks of Oklahoma were under the guarantee deposit law of tho state. She felt perfectly satis lleld with that protection afforded by tho new banking lnw and would on ly draw upon her account when net uallv needed. "We could multiply Instances of the same character almost without number, but hardly think It neces sary to give additional ones. 1 am one of the national bankers who hove availed myself of the benefit of the depositors guarantee law of our stnt1 and feel that it is the hest move that we have ever made since we have been in the banking business. "There was no particular renson why our deposits should increase so rapidly, ns our city has only had steady growth, no boom of any kind and no unusual deposits of nny size. I Inn k Failures rnneccNsnry. "I believe the banking business to be nn honorable business and if con ducted neocrdlng to law there will never be a failure of either a na tional or a state bank, and ns long ns banks are conducted along these lines the bankers should bo willing to stand for each other and there would be no liability in doing so if the business is conducted ns It should be. If the bunkers of our state nre not willing to stnnd for mutual pro tection of each other. I cannot for the lift of me see how they could expect the deposits of the public to be left with them without any guar antee whatever. If the bankers themselves cannot trust each other. I feel certain that no banker will ever be called upon to pay any guar antee for our business, and I have faith in the banks of our state that I conducted along simllnr lines thnt 1 will not be called upon to pay for nny of their shortcomings. With the supervision that tbe state banking board is giving the secured bnnks. together with the class of bankers thnt we have In the business, I feel uuite sure there will be no loss to the banks on nccount of the depositors! guarantee law. "There is a sense of security In running a bank under the dcositors guarantee lnw thnt there never was before, in this, as we know that no fnlse rumors enn be started affect ing the bunks that are under this new law. The public knows full well thnt the failure of any bank would not affect their deposits, hence, for thnt reason, along with many others. 1 think that the law Is hav ing a good effect uon the banks and the people that do business with them. We can loan a larger per cent of the bank's funds nml fel perfectly safe In so doing, knowing full well that the tongue of the slanderer Is hushed and a false re port of the envious Is stopped before tt even gets a start. ' Ished everybody by their brilliancy and had their orbits calculated and then when the "astronomers predicted they were going to reappear they nev er returned und the astronomers were covered with confusion.
