Ilia uooiwt hlue eyes extlted envy In the bosom of many a lass, uud eveu May Lor liiK's proud heurt thrilled with ad ujI ra tion when IiIh rleb harltone rilled tbe church u he led the village choir. Hut May bad other IdeaU. Hbe loused to he u real heroine In one of life's wild dranuiK. She cared for Harry more than alio dared admit, but tried lo a hk tire herself that she was only Ulrtlng with hhu. Harry, on the other hand, became deeply In love. As they aalled In the moonlight or rodo ilirouuli the shady woods on Sunday ifternoons he talked Incessantly of !iappy dnyB to come. May allowed hint :o talk us he would. Hue thought t romantic to hear bJtu thus con verse. Summer waned. Soon came the time (or May to return to ber home. Hurry it length wew disturbed. May bail mrdly Intimated that she cared for 'ihn, and of late be had sometimes thought ber cold. What could she mean? He must know, for soou they must separate, and, oh, would they part forever? Hy clmuce they did not meet until the day prior to May's de parture. May's cheerful loveliness soon dispelled Harry's apprehensions, and they wandered through the wild wood to have their farewell talk. Coming to u shady dell, May sat down upon a knoll, while Harry reclined at her feot. For the moment May's heart some what relented when she realized how infatuated Harry had become. Her lips trembled, and her eyes drooped. Harry of course noticed the change. He Interpreted It to mean more than it did and passionately exclaimed: "May. oh. May, you care for me! Tell me he fore wo part that you love ne; th.it you'll be mine!" May's countenance changed, nnd there was alienee. Did he guess that lu ber mind was that handsome stranger Bho had met In vacation? Whatever wero his thoughtH, be remained silent Like a statue he now stood, gnzlng upon be: downcast face. May's cheek was pallid, but ber voice was cold and decisive as at length she replied; "Your wishes are exorbitant Indeed. I never cau love you.M Again a moment be stood proudly and then turned aside. Baying: "Then, Miss Loring, we must part." She saw him disappear umopg the trees. The following day they both left the village, she for iter village home, he for another clime. Mr. Sidney, with whom May hnri be come enamored the vacation before, re sumed his attentions as soon as May rea died the villa ge. With his ea sy manner, elegant address and galnly stylo he was .May's Ideal. Yet. after ill, there was something about him that ahe repulsed. Despite ber efforts to dispel thoughts of Hurry her Imag ination ofttlmes turned to hhu. Now that he was gone she felt his loss. She often secretly longed to look Into bis mild eyes and then for the moment dis dained the restless demeanor of Mr. Sidney. Hut still the latter fascinated her. and she Implicitly trusted him. Thus a few mouths passed, and too soon Mr. Sidney was summoned, as be said, to his home. It was then that May learned that he hud foiled her: Unit all his charming pretenses had iK'en false. Her tear stained eyes read the paragraphs where his marriage with another was uunounced. Tain seldom comes singly. May was scarcely calmed when a message caine that cut her still more deeply. Harry Hay ford, the report read, and It bad every proof, bad died In an explosion In n mine. I'oor May's last hope vanished. ThoughtH of the past were painful, and to evade them she destroyed every reminiscence. Itetnovlng to auother place, she took up the duties of pre ceptress. Twelve years passed, bringing little change. May's laughing black eyes be came serious, but they were gentle and tender. The chlldreu adored her. Her friends admired her uud enme to her for counsel and advice. Felicity ojh parent ly was hers. At last the illness of her mother re called her to her niUlve town. She en tered It with aching heart. Hut, ah. she knew not fortune It hapeued that one afternoon nho was Invited to the house of a friend. During a short In terval that she was left alone she took up n case of photographs. As she looked at them ber eyes fell on one that made her heart bound and flutter. Old memories were brought vividly back, and, without resisting the Im pulse, she pressed the photo again aud again to her lips. "May I" She could not hellevtt that she heard, and terror seized her. The voice so strangely familiar now seemed weird and unearthly. (iattilng courage, she looked up Da7.d iH'.vond tm-aiMire, she felt her brain confuse. Fainting, she fell Into Harry Harford's arms. R. train from Pendleton to La Grande, Ore.," writes Sam A Garber, a well known traveling man. "I was In the smok ing department with some other trav eling men when one of them went out Into the coachand came back and said: 'There Is a woman sick unto death In the car.' I at once got up and went out, found her very 111 with cramp colic; her hands and arms were drawn up so you could not straighten them, and with a death like look on her face. Two or three ladles were working with her and giving her whiBkey. I went to my suit case and got my bottle of Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarr hoea Remedy (I never travel without it), ran to the water tank, put a dou ble dose of the medicine in the glass, poured some water Into It and stirred it with a pencil; then I had quite a time to get the ladies to let me give it to her, but I succeeded. I could at once see the effect and I Worked with her, rubbing her hands, and In twenty minutes I gave her another dose, lly this time we were almost Into La Grande, where I was to leave the trnin. I gave the bottle to the husband to be used In case another lose should be needed, but by the time the train ran Into La Grande she was all right, and I received the thanks of every passenger In tlx car."
