An Impurtniit deal has been consummat ed whereby a distributing plfnt for Swift. & Co., the Chicago packers, will J;e lo-atd in Ornnts Pass. .1. 11. Ahlf, the former manager nnd owner of the Urania Pass Packing Company will be manager of the plant. Mr. Ahlf's brick building and packing establishment located in this city will be used, though it will be remodellel and equipped for the more extensive business of the big concern. Hie new plant will not only be the distributing warehouse for the meats of Swift & Co. sold in southern Ore gon, but also for tho soaps and all articles manufactured by litem. Ten thousand cans of fruit are be ing put up every day at the Grants Pass cannery. This is one of the largest and best equipped enterprises of Its kind in Oregon. In Tuesday prim ary election. Judge Stephen J. Chad wick, of Colfax, was given the non partisan nomination, which Is equiv alent to an election. Though a democrat, he led the judicial ticket, receiving 330 plurality, or 23 per cent more votes than his leading com petitor. The result is In line with two former instances in Judge Chad wick's career, in each of which he was elected superior judge in a dis trict overwhelmingly republican, without opposition. The other sons of Oregon on the supreme bench of Washington are Wallace Mount, K. O. Dunbar and Mark Fullertou. The boyhood of all, Including Judge Chndwick, was spent In Marlon coun-; ty. Judge Chadwick Is a sou of the late Governor Chadwick ot Oregon, who succeeded to the executive of fice on the election of Governor Grover as United States senator in the latter 70's. Marsh field Times: L. J. Simpson, of North Bend, has secured a fran chise from tho county court for the use of the public highway between Hony Slough and Sunset Bay for an electric line. It was uuoillcially stat ed today that the matter had been closed up and that Mr. Simpson would begin tho construction of the line next spring. It Is understood to bo Mr. Simpson's idea to convert Sunset hay into a great pleasure re sort. It is one of the most beauti ful spots along the coast and he has extensive holdings there. He has built an elegant summer home called "Shore Acres" there. Construction work on the line between Nort,h Bend and Pony Slough was started sometime ago so that the two will connect up, making a direct line from Coos Bay at North Bend to the new pleasure ground. St. Joseph's school opened yester day. The common grades will be taught and a kindergarten depart ment will be established. The kin dergarten will be in the hands of an experienced sister, and Miss Olive Ar-i boarding dis McGee, a graduate of the Sacred Heart Academy, at Salem, will assist In the grammar-grade work. The school is being held at the parochial residence, just east of the church, on Oak street. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu gene, Sept. 13. The Y. M. C. A. of the University of Oregon has devis ed a novel and effective method for assisting new university students to find boarding and rooming places. They will erect a large tent near the . depot where headquarters will be established and full information kept In regard to all boarding houses. A ' large Oregon banner is to be placed above Ui entrance, and nil or the as sistants, of whom there will be 12 or 15, will also wear the Oregon colors. They expect all etudejits to make the tent headquarters and to leave suitcaseo and .parcels there until rooms are found.
