Tbe Musaaehusettt highway commis sion 1 to conduct an Interesting ex perlment In road building on Cape Cod, where there is no stone to speak of. A heavy grade of Texas crude oil containing a large percentage of as phalt will be used with tbe sand. The sand road will first be shaped with a road machine, and heated oil will be spread over the surface. A second lot of oil will be sprinkled on when the first coiit lias leon on for two weeks. The surface will then be cut up with a disk harrow so as to mix the sand and oil to a depth of four Inches. Aft: er this has been done tbe road wUl be rolled und the surface sprinkled with a thin layer of siind to absorb the sur fiK'e oil. A tittle work of this sort was done under the highway commission's supervision about two years ago, which has resulted satisfactorily. Importance of Good Roads. The (iaffney (H. C. Leder gives the following fact and comment, which af ford a practical argument ou the huIh Jeet of highway Improvement In a nutshell: Some Cherokee county land Bold the other day at public outcry and brought from $10 to $,'t7.o0 per acre. This land wus twelve miles from the county seat ut that. If we hnd macadam roads this same land would have brought ?.r0 to JUKI per ncro. Half a million dolhirs spent in building good roads fu Cherokee would mean an Increase of a million dollars In the value of our farm lands alone. Will people never nwake to their own Interests and be gin doing something for themselves, or will they ronl'i'iue to abide In the TEA was a royal indulgence two hundred years ago. Tis vet. Tbe capitalist ran his linger up und down over a row of cards on which were written tbe uauien of ersous In tbe anteroom who were waiting to eon BUlt blm. "Is your card here, sir?" he asked. "Where Is your card?' "In that drawer, sir." said tbe young man, pointing to n compartment In the desk marked "Private." "What are you a lunatic?" asked tbe capitalist, thinking of HuhspII Sage and his experience with the dynamite crauk and looking hastily around the ofllce for a means of escape. "National Intelligencer," replied the young man. "What what d'you say?" gasped the now alarmed man of business. "Xn-t lon-al ln-tel-ll-gen-cer. ICound theruggednK'ktherugedraHeiilrun." The capitalist breathed a sigh of re lief. "And you took that method to prove your sanity?" he said. "Just It." said the young man. "Hut about your curd?" ventured the capitalist, a little doubtful again. "If you will unlock the drawer, you wlli find my card and my business on It," he reiterated. The capitalist Impatiently unlocked the drawer, and his face c bunged somewhat lu expression us be saw ly ing there a card which reud as follows: "Louis Lelolr, Teacher of Ledgerde main." He looked up ut the young uiau and smiled slightly. "Well, 1 guess you've got me this time. How did that curd get there?" The young man bowed politely and smiled very engagingly as he said. "1 can't tell you that, but If you wish to learu some new tricks I will Instruct you for a small amount" "I have no time to learn tricks. Thin Is my busy day, aud I hope you will let me transact my regular business and allow me to bid you good Say. how the uilschlef did you do that?" The (ucstiou was natural enough. Tor Mr. I.eloir, who was nlwut to go, wtH.d his brow with a large silk handker chief aud then droped the handker chief into his hat. As he did so he turned the inside of his hat toward Ihe capitalist, but the bat was empty. "Do you udud doing that ugalu?" "I can't see him at present," said the capitalist testily. Tbe clerk bowed and left tbe otiiee. "Now for the trick." said the capital ist "Io you absolutely guarantee that I can do it?' "I do." "All right Here's the money." The conjurer proceeded to Initiate the cupltullst Into the mysteries of the trick, and the capitalist began to prac tice It. "Pshaw!" said the bus! new man. "That's too simple for auytblng." "Thut's the beauty of all uiy tricks they're simple. Here's uuother. Take that cane In both bauds." The capitalist grnsed the cane firm ly. The conjurer tapped it U few times with a brass rlug, and, presto, the ring was whirling n round the cone, having encircled It In most luexptlcable way. "How much?" asked the business uiau. 'Five dollars.
