A tramp, with a roll of blankets swung across his back, had a wry close call for his life In trying to steal a ride on the second sect ion of the northbound overland train, No. 16, at Central Point, Tuesday night. While the train was at a standstill the man was ordered off by Con ductor W. B. Johnston, but when It began pulling out of the station he tried to swing ontc a brakebeam un derneath one of the coaches. He did not gain the place and the result wus that he waB left hanging at arms' length to a rod, while the lower por tion of his body was dragged over the track. Hearing the sound of scraping gravel, Conductor John son, who was Just about to board the train, peered underneath the coach and saw the tramp's peril. He Im mediately brought the train to a stop by a signal to the engineer, and the tramp scrambled out to safety, at the name time cursing the con ductor for his trouble. A number of Lane county hop growers held a meeting In ICugene to talk over the picking situation and to tnlk "hops" In general. All partB of the hop-growing district of the county were fairly well represented. After duly considering the prospect for priceB for the crop, H was resolv ed that the growers could not afford to pay more than 7 5 cents per 100 pounds for picking this year. Accord ing to remarks made by a number of growers, it Ib likely that many yards will not be picked even at that price. Others will harvest their crops as usual and trust to a betterment in the market. When Steep Was Yrumpe.
