It fB not Buprlslng that the Oily News was wrathy because we called attention to Its syHtematlc knock against the Btreet paving at the most critical moment In the consumma tion of that enterprise. Of course, its utterances were totally Ignored, just as we knew they would bo, but that did not deter tie from pointing out where that disreputable sheet and its backers rightfully holong. Trying to scramble onto the band wagon since the matter Is decided and the paving Is about to begin, on ly shows their contemptible and con summate gnll. He falls to dlu liiKiilHh between the IioneHt buHlneaa that makes a coiinLry proKperouH, and the brlKand hk practiced by private monpolies. The people have been robbed by the triiHtH to the extent of hundreds of millions a yeur, nnd IT Mr. Tuft Ih not yet coiiHcioiiH of what U going on, and not yet aroused to the Iniquity of tbeH truHtK, how can the country hojie for relief through bis election.? The democrat Ic party is the de fender of competition and the only great party which Is seeking to re store competition. Mr. Taft has, In the (HhcuhhIoii of this question, em ployed harsh words, his Lend of argn-! ment. Tho word "BoclallBtlc Is hurled at the democratic party and tho democratic platrorm. Now, as a matter'of fuct, it Is Mr. Taft's party and not the democratic party which has given encouragement to social ism. While professing to abhor so cialism, the republican party has gone half wuy toward socialism In endorsing Its fundamental principle. The socialist buses IiIh contention on the theory that competition Is bad, and that an economic advance Is to be found In monopoly. The socialist, however, wnuls the public to have the benefit of the monojioly and, therefore, favora government owner ship and operation of nil the means of production and distribution. The republican leaders hove been In the habit of sneering at the so elhlistR, while blindly Indifferent to the causes that have contributed to the growth of socialism. Tiie demo crats recognize that socialists are honestly seeking a remedy for the "known abuses" admitted by Secre tary Taft. Democrats dissent from the remedy proposed . by the social ists, believing that socialists are mis taken and that the democratic rem edy I better, but it is time for thoughtful people to recognize that Individualism can only be retained and defended by remedial legislation which will remove the abuses which hove been allowed to fasten them selves upon the country. The demo cratic party, believing lu Individual ism, addresses Itself earnestly to these abuses, nnd Instead of ridicul ing and maligning the socialists. In vites them, as It does republicans, to examine the democratic platform and t h e rented Ich proposed therein . 1 1 submits its plnns to the bone' t citi zenship of tho country, without re gard to section or party. In my notification speech I called atte.itlou to three demands made by our party. It asks, first, that the government shall be tuKcn out of the hands of special Interests, and restor ed to tho people as a whole: It nsks. second, for honesty In elections and publicity In regard to enmpau funds, that the people may free choose representatives In sympirtl j with thein and pledged to gun heir Interests; It asks, third, for such a modification of our govern mental methods as will make the Hi-nate nn elective body, and place he control of the house of repre sentatives in the hands of a maturity of Its members. A few days ngo. in discussing the tariff question, 1 dwelt upon the fourth demand made by our party, namely, that taxation, be just, that the revenue laws be made for the purpose of raising rev enue and not for the enrichment of a few at the expense of the many, and that the tariff law be supple mented by an Income tax which wilt more nearly equalize the govern ment's burdens. Today 1 present on :itber demand In our party platform ---I he demand that the grip of the 'rusts he broken, that competition be restored and that the door of op portunity ho opened to the business men nnd toilers of the land. I ml ust rial Independence Is neces sary to political Independence. The free exercise of the rightu of citizen ship is impossible when n few men control the industries In which mil lions are employed. Clod forbid thai we should compel the wage-earners of the nation to address their poll tlotis to trust magnates, nnd ask for their dally bread. Already we have seen how prone the monopolist Is to make employment depend upon the willingness of the employe to prosti tute his ballot to the service of bis corporate muster. . This question should be settled now; we cannot afford to bequeath It us a legacy of woe to a succeed lng generation. The conscience of the people Is already awakened, and the conscience is the most potent force of with h man has knowledge. Where law makes one righteous, conscience cont rots an hundred ; where one Is kept from wrong-doing by fear of prison doors, a thousand are re strained by those Invisible walls which conscience rears about us barriers which are itmnger than wallf of granite. It Is upon the con science that human Institutions rent. For a Bad Case of Eczema on Child Suffered for Three Months Disease Reached a Fearful State Pain and Itching were Terrible. CURED AFTER OTHER PRESCRIPTIONS FAILED "When I was small I was troubled with eczema for about three months. It was all over my face and covered nearly ell of my head. It reached Buch a state that it was just a large scab all over, and the pain and itching were terrible. I doctored with an able physician for some time and was then advised by him to use the Cutlcura Remedies which I did and I was entirely cured. I have not been bothered with It since. I used Cutlcura Soap and Cuticura Ointment but do not know exactly how much was used to complete the cure. I can safely say that Cuticura did a lot for me. Miss Anabel Wilson, North branch, Mich.., Oct. 20, 1U07." ITCHING CURED With Cuticura Remedies in Three Days After Six Months of Suffering. I suffered fully six months. Th trouble began on my arms in little red pimples und it was not long before It was all over my body, limbs, face, and hands. It was so bad that 1 could not rest night or day and during the six months, I did not get a good night's sleep. I doctored for three or four months and spent at least twenty dol lars trying to find a euro but none could be found. Then I saw the Cuticurp Remedies advertised, and the next day I purclued some for seventy-five cents at the druggist's. I used them and I was relieved of the itching in three days, and I have nover had a sign of any skin disease since. The Cuticura Remedies are the only remedies to use for skin diseases, they have cured me and they will cure others in the same way. J. W. Bloom, R. It. Telegrapher, Holloway, Mich., Nov. 20 and Dec. 29, 1900." . Cuticura Remedies are guaranteed absolutely pure under the United States food and DrtigB Act. (it In the form of CliixHilaia and without a stirring of the con science no great reform Is possible. To a national conscience already aroused we appeal, with the pledge that a democratic victory will meun the ringing out of industrial despot ism and the ringing In of a new era in which business will be built upon Its merits, and in which men will suc ceed, not In proportion to the coer cion they may be able to practice, but in proportion to their industry, luetr ability and their fidelity. 4.
