HUEY Jeweler and Optician PKOH-E KNOW TI1KIR KNKM1ES. iU'ul McuuiMK of Defeat ut KlltretlK lxng und Hansbrouli, WASHINGTON, Aug. 19. It can not be properly auld that there Is any natfonul BiKnlflcance in the de feat or Unltwd Ktateu senators llans ItroiiKh, KlttrWlKe and Long, unle it be Unit the downTall of these three men be Indicative of a general de termination of the people to be f. ill, i Hilly represented In congress. This trio went down to defeat for u single reason; every one of these senators betrayed the people he was supposed to represent, and shaped his course in congress to meet the ap proval of corporate Interests, tiuch regarded himself as bigger than his constituency, and each relied upon his machine to keep him in office. Hut lu these uncertain days machines have lost their power, and are of lit tle assistance to men in olllce who have no popular support. Of (lie three defeated Bonators, two were cowards; Kittredge alone had the nerve to pursue a consistent course up to the moment of his de feat, llausbrough, to curry favor, became an eleventh hour convert to Roosevelt ism, and Long, when he saw defeat ahead, forsook his old friends and turned uppealingly to Tuft, the ascending republican lead er. Hut Long und liansbrough were converted too late; their people had no more love for cowardH than for traitors and they were each handed Hie same bitter dose that was prepar ed for the sturdier Kittredge. Itadicals Will Succeed Them. Kuch of these senators will be suc ceeded by a republican, but the three new senators will be anti-corporation men, known as "radicals" in their respective states, and all will be supporters of the Roosevelt-Tatt policies. Had llausbrough, Long and Kittredge been victorious they would have returned to the Aldrich camp In the senate, and would have been as active autl-Taft men as they have previously been niill-Uoosevelt. The elimination of liansbrough, Kitt redge und Long is in the interest of party harmony, and will be of mat erial aid to the Tuft administration If the republicans ure victorious in No vember. llausbrough. Long and Kittredge were sent to the senate by the rail roads, and there they labored to the best of their ability to serve their strongest backers. They also were mindful of other corporate Interests, for "railroad senators" always rallied under the Aldrich banner Aldrich, the friend or the Standard Oil and In matters or legislation corporation Inllueuce In the senate was always concentrated. The "weedlng-out" process has be gun. It will be continued In Wis consin later on, when Senator Steph enson, the richest man in the senate. Is retired at the close of his present short and uneventful term. Stephen son, who was eleciiul to 1111 out the remainder of the Spoouer term, pro mised, when elected, to retire next March. It was only on thin condition that his election became possible. He also promised to act with La Kollette, Hut. when he got a taste of senatorial life, he forgot his promises; he join ed the Aldrich forces and now has announced himseir a candidate for i re-election. As .Mr. LaFoltette Is at present coud net ing things political in Wis consin, Mr. Stephenson's term will expire as orlgually Intended, on March 4. lilO't. and he will he suc ceeded by n man or tho La Follette rather than the Aldrich type. Ebony was known and highly es teemed by the ancients as an article of luxury and was used by them fot a vurlety of purposes. The name ebony Is given to the wood of Beverul varieties of trees. All kinds of ebony are distinguished for their great density and dark color. The wood iu ull varieties is heavier than water. The heaviest varieties are the darkest. The other grades require a considerable amount of ntalnlng to make them black.
