Mr. George ltussell, discoursing ou tips In tbe Manchester Guardian, after the manner of his "Collections aud Recollections," treats tbe subject his torically Under Its various names of fees, vales (or volla), honorarium (as Disraeli preferred to call It) and pouches. . Ancient usuo hits a peculiarly con secrutlug vttw t In the matter of tips and fee. Horace WHlpole records the astonishment of George I. when told that be must glvu guluens to tbe serv ant of the raii-vr of bis park for bringing ill ni a bruce of carp out of his own pond. Apparently uvtryhody In England Is at some time or other Justified In de manding a fee unless it be the mon arch. When Talt became archbishop of Canterbury and met the queen he breathed a Blgh of relief on at last en countering a person to whom he bad not to pay something. According to Bishop Burnet, a man used to have to give a tip In order to be decapitated. He tells tbe story of Lord Husscll when under Beuteuce of death for high treason asking who be ought to give the executioner. "I told him 10 guineas. He said, with a smile. tt was a pretty thing to give a fee to have his head cut off." For Number Two.. "George, dear, what kind of a wom an would you marry If you nmrittHj again?" asked the nmluble wife. "Well, If I married again began tbe brutal husband. "Theu you acknowledge that you would marry again?" I'm not saying one way or the oth er, but" "But you don't give me a definite auswer, aud that proves" 'That doesn't prove anything, be cause "It does tool So what kind of a woman would you marry if you mar ried again?" -I wouldn't mnrry again. 1 could not." Of course you have to say that." 'Of course J do, because I was about to say that If 1 married again tt would be tho kind of a woman who would not ask me what klpd of a wo rn nu 1 would marry If I married again." Judge. , Singing Pigeons. The queer Chinese change pigeons Into song birds by fattening whistles to their breasts. The wind of their flight then cauaes a weird aud plaintive music that Is seldom silenced hi the pigeon haunted cltles'of Pekln nnd Canton. The llplglans, great pigton fliers, fasten whistles beneath the wings of valuable racing carriers, claiming Unit the shrill noise Is a sure protecting against hawks and other birds of prey. As a similar pro tection, reeds, emitting an odd wall ing sound, are llxed to the tall feath ers of the dbtjmlcb bearing pigeons of tbe Oerman army. What H. Was Looking For. I du wish.
