"Bet all your money on Bryan to win, and all you can borrow." Such 1b the advice of D. M. Wat son to those asking his opinion on the result of the November election. WatJion returned home this morning, the last of the Oregon delegates to arrive from the National convention at Denver, ays the Portland Tele gram. When Watson was not ap pointed on the notification committee he packed his valise and went to Ne braska and called on Bryan in per son. "And I want .to say," declared Watson, "that I wasn't put off the notification committee. I got off it myself. I got everything 1 wanted while away, reports to the contrary notwunstanding." Concerning the political prospects Watson Is enthusiastic. "Mr. Bryan told me," said the re turned wanderer, "that the chances of his election look better this year than ever before. He Is very confld ent of Buccess. All the reports he is receiving are most favorable, went to Lincoln and telephoned out to Fairvlcw, where Bryan lives, and ho told me to come right out. 1 took the trolley, went to his home and talked there an hour with him. I noticed that every house between uincom and ralrview, with one ex- 'cptlon, hnd a picture of Bryan in the window. It was not like that In other campaigns and 1 spoke to Hrynn about it. Me replied that his follow citizens were doing him great er honor tbnn in the past and it was an encouraging sign. The people of Jncoln no longer consider Bryan's ?andldacy a Joke and they are work ing to elect him. While I was .nt the Bryan home the great American was very busy. le has to dictate hundreds of let ters, give Instructions, and hold re- eptlons. Delegations are calling on him continually. In former cam paigns llrynn had to go on toure to meet the people. Now they come to see him. Fall-view is the Mecca, believe Bryan could remain at his home all during the campaign and not have to take the -stump. Contrl bullous are coming in freely. Farm era are coming to Bee Bryan from all the adjacent states, bringing their contributions to the campaign fund. These contributions he turns over to the nntlonal committee. From what I could learn, Bryan will carry Indiana. Ohio, New York and other big states. The death of Senator Allison yesterday may lose Bryan Iowa, although but. for the un- Imely death of the senator, the democratic nominee could easily have swept the state. This was be cause of the factional fights which have been waging In Iowa. The death ot Allison will probably result the warring factions coming to some sort of a compromise. Most of he stales 1 visited were in the south which are naturally for Bryun, heard little Taft talk. The Im pression exists thnt Taft Is principal ly a big smller and not a thinker like Hryan. Taft has held oftico for years, ut always appointive oflh-es. One thing which will have a strong bearing on the result of the election will be the crops. , The states through which I traveled are suffering from a short crop. In many sections the corn crop is prac tically a failure. Inasmuch as the republican party Is given credit for giving good crops and bountiful harvests, the present failure will bring thousands of farmers over to Bryan. I found many republicans who declared they would vote for Bryan and democrats who left the party In 1896 nnd since then, told me they were coming back to the fold. The colored vote in the north will be for llrynn. This Is because of the action of President Roosevelt over the Brownsville affair. The colored porters on the northern trains are red-hot Bryan boomers. n the south, of course, the colored voters talk less of the election the whites won't permit them to. I found, also, nutikerous republicans who are tired of the one-man power of the republican party and wont the peopio to navo sometiinig to saw he Deliver convention wns a con dition of the people and the most enthusiastic, assembly of the kind In lstory. "Mr. Bryan is constantly receiving letters from leaders throughout the country. He told me he hod received from Colonel (luffey. In which the politician explained to Brvnn hat his defeat In the Denver con dition wum strictly personal and hat it would not prevent him from olng all In his power to assist in electing the .Nebraskan. This is pirn ot narmnny not' so prevalent the republican camn. from what I could learn. Judge Parker is nut orkinx tor Bryan and was (o speak t-amornia lam night for the icket. do not believe that Brvan will come to the coast on his ramnnlirn tour. There are onlv a few vme nm is war. and It would be better policy for him to devote hla lime to the cant where there are more voted." County Clerk Bepotlzed as Tiie War-di-u by State Board. The Review was In error in its is sue of Wednesday In stating that the county clerk had no authority to Is sue permits to burn slashings. The law states that such permits are to be obtained from a fire warden, but County Clerk Lenox has been dep utized to act as such an officer, pur suant to authority given the State Board of . orestry under the follow ing portion of the law: "State and county officials whose duties make their ex officio services as fire wardens especially desirable as a convenience to the public, shall accept appointments aa such when formally requested by the State Board of Forestry. Upon the recom mendation of the Federal Forest Supervisor, the board may appoint resident officers of the national for est reserves who shall be ex officio (ire wardens."
