With near ly a dozen active candidates fur the presidential nomination In the field, the ludependi lice 1'arty national con vention will resume Us session this afternoon and before midnight, ac cording to plans, will have made a choice of Its standard bearers, adopt ed a platform and concluded Its business. This morning (he state delegations held uieetlngK tu elect new national committeemen and chairmen of dele gations and to agree as to planks In the platform to be supported and candidates for president and vice president. Although many delegations have joined in a demand that William Randolph Hearst accept the presi dential nomination, he Is apparently determined that the honor go else where and his wishes will probably ho respected. Among those men tioned for the llrst place on the ticket are Thomas L. IliMgen, or Mas sachusetts; John Ten pi o (IraveH, of (jeorgla, and Id. v I oward of Alabama, H AHHI. I The president of the hoard wan au thorized to construct at once a new building to bo completed by the op ening of the fall semester. Tho plans have already been drawn for one that j will contain about fifteen rooms, and work will begin on It at once. It will greatly relieve the overcrowded con dition of the other buildings. Sev ern) other new buildings wilt be constructed as soon as possible, but probably no work can be done until spring. The addition of the new Instruct ors to the teaching force will mean much for the work of the University. The rapid growth In the number of students has greatly crowded many! departments and some, like the de-1 partment of Geology, hnvo been without a head for some time. The Correspondence School will he much stronger than last year and the new man in the department of Political Science wilt greatly strengthen tho course preparatory to Law. The work of the library will be greatly expanded. "It will be the policy of the Uni versity to secure the best possible men for IIu-hp and all other posi tions," President Campbell said to day, "for tho real success of any school Is measured by the worth e Its teaching force. No college on the Coast has a better Instructional force than the University of Oregon and every effort will be made to keep the standard at the highest. The law is hitting the Hermans o hard that the union of Industrials Is now petitioning the Herman govern ' nient to adopt retaliatory measures. Several Knslish authorities are con vinced that the new law will confer greater commercial and industrial benelltK on (Ireat Britain than any law that has been passed in the last half century. It has already resulted In the employment of many thousand British work people and the Intro duction of an enormous amount of capital from foreign countries.
