Detailed Plans arc U be Drawn fur the Coimiwrciul Club. Another interesting meeting of the Koseburg Commercial Club was held Monday evening. Assistnat Secretary Zurcher was instructed to circulate a petition to the postmaster general for the establishment of a free mail delivery system in Roscburg, and a committee of five members was ap pointed to confer with the city coun cil on having all the houses in the city properly numbered as required before such free delivery will be established. The matter or distri bution of the new booklets on Rose burg and Douglas county was discus sed, but the matter was left without further action, the present distribu tion being about 200 per day by the assistant secretary and local citizens, most of the booklets being sent east. The Harriman Homeseekers' Bureau has 5000 of the 20,000 booklets printed and is distributing them through their various agencies. Showing the country around Hose- j burg to newcomers was discussed and the members of the club having their own vehicles agreed to share t in seeing that this is done. It do I velnped that a good many strangers, ; are now arriving here and consider-J able attention has been shown them : by club members. This will be given : still better attention hereafter. ! Y. D. What will be the largest national political convention of the year, in point of number of delegates, will begiu in this city tomorrow and will nomin ate a national ticket and adopt & platform on which the foes of the ruin demon will stand it) this yeui'o campaign. A large proportion of the 1512 delegates have arrived and the wire-pulling for the presidential nomination has already commenced. The Intercollegiate Prohibition Association will hold Its oratorical contest this evening, when elocution ists from all over the United States will launch oratorical broadsides at the Haloon. Cash prizes will be awarded the winners. Among the presidential candidates mentioned are Seaborn Wright, of Georgia; and Judge S. A. Artman. of Lebanon, lnd., who came Into prom inence about a year ago by a legal lecision In which he declared that the granting of a saloon license Is illegal. Apparently a majority of tho lead ers believe that It would be belter to nominate for president a man who has become prominent In the anM saloon work while holding onVo tin ier- one of the old parties. PORTLAND, Or., July 13. Of the 17 "Heney cases" land fraud in dictments yet to be disposed of, only half will be tried by T. C. Becker, special assistant to the At torney general. The remaining cases are to be dismissed. This was ono of the objects of Mr. Becker's trip to California to confer with F, J . Heney . It has long been generally under stood that there were a number of cases in which the government had small hopes ol' success, while lu oth ers the government has a better chance. The good cases are said to be about nine leaving eight which are doubtful, weak or unnecessary. Some me during the Summer, when the me Is considered Judicious, Becker expected to dismiss the eight cases. Is possible, however, that he may leave this duty for Heney wheu the tter come to Portland in November try Blnger Hermann, ex-Commis sioner of the general land office. W. J. Aniiitagv Loses Another Drug Store (it Arletu. For the second time within a month, W. J. Armltage, a former resident of Myrtle Creek, and well known In Roseburg, bus sustained tho loss of a drug store by tire at Arleta, a suburb of Portland, Oa this latter occasion a real estate of fice, a grocery store and a bouse were also destroyed. The fire Is said to havo been of Incendiary orlgtu. due to an alleged "bllud pig" con ducted in the drug store. The Port land Journal, of Monday, July 23, has this to say lu regard to the affair: Armltago bad just about closed a deal for the Bale of his drug store to William 11. Miller. A month ago he was operating a drug store across the street from the one that bruued this morning. It burned to the ground, and the Insurance has not yet been paid. Armltage, who owned the frame skating rink building across the street moved la there with a new stock. There has beon considerable trou ble lu Arleta and Kern Park over the operation of the drug store. It was said that a great deal of whiskey has been sold In there, and that the place had been the hangout for men of the district. All day yesterday neighbors snld they heard men In the drug store carousing, and Baw several leave by way of the rear door. It is said there was a fight In the store last evening that threaten ed to bocome serious. Although mauy explanations of the cauHo of the fire were offered by the residents of the little suburb this morning, no one seemed to know de- . finitely what its origin was. It was suggested that some enemies of Ar mltage might have burned the place In order to rid the town of a blind pig, hut as a fire In the drug store would necessarily destroy surround ing property. It Is not bolloved that anyone would have gone to that ex tent. An Investigation will be con ducted by tho insurance companies, however, to ascortain how and by what the fire was Btarted. Over Thirty-five Venrw. In 1872 there was a great deal of diarrhoea and cholera Infantum. It was at this lime that Chamberlalub Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Rem edy was llrst brought Into use. It proved more successful than any other remedy or treatment, und has for thirty-five years maintained that record. From a small beginning Its sale and uso has extended to every part of tho United States and to many foreign countries. Nine drug gists out of ten will recommend It when their opinion Ih asked, al though they havo other medicine that pay them a greater profit. It can always bo depended upon, even In the most severe and dangeroiiB cases. For sale by Mammon urug Co. Admits Gallagher Job. SAN FRANCISCO. July 14.
