Department of AKricultui says that success In trapping wolves and coyotes depends largely on the use of a scent that will attract them and keep them tramping and paw iug until caught. Meat bait alone Is of little use and often, Indeed, Hcares the animals away. Of the man scents and combinations tested the fetid bait has proved the moHt success ful. The following directions for Its preparation and use are given: IMace half a pound of raw beef or venison lu a wldemuuthed bottle and let It stand In a warm (but not In the buu) for five or Blx weeks, or until It Is thoroughly decayed and the odor has become as offeuulve as possible. When decomposition has reached the proper stage add a quart of sperm oil or any liquid animal oil Lard oil may bo use, but prairie-dog oil la better. Then add 1 ounce ol liucture of Siberian musk, or Ton quln musk. If this cannot bo pro cured, ubo in Its place 1 ounce of dry pulverized castureum (beaver cas lor) or 1 ounce of the common musk sold for perfumery. Mix well and bottle securely until used. After setting the trap apply the scent with a stick or straw or by pouring from the bottle to the gruus, weeds or ground on tho side of the t:ap opposlto that from wRtch the wolf would naturally approach Never put scent on tho trap, aa the flret Impulse of the wolf after snif fing the scent In tu rail on It. This bait is tery attractive also to cattle and horses, which are sure to tramp over and paw out the traps if set where they can gel at them. I'ojN'iflilig Wolves and Coyotes, The bulletin also recomniMids the following method of pulsoning .votves and coyotes: No poison has yet proved so ef fective as pure sulphate of strych nine, provided tho proper douo is used. TB& most effective dpjo Is i grains for wolves and 2 grulas for voiotes. The common 3-grulii gela tin capsules sgld by druggists wi'i held, If well filled. 4 griilns of stry chnine and are better than the larg er cai-BUles. Tho regular 2-gruliy cap sules mould be used for . coyot.'j. The rapsulos should he filled, lie curely inpi-i'd, and ovjry traco of the Intensely billei drjg wiped frm Hie Hillside. f.'ach capxulo iffioiild bo Inserted In a piece of beef suet the size of'n wal nut and tho cavity securely clused' to ' keep out the moisture. Lean niat should not bo used, as the fulce jii dlssolvos the gelutln of the t'npsule. The necessary number o poisoned baits may be proparod and pnrrtcifc in a tin can or pall. Thuy should never be handled except with gloved hands or forceps. The baits mny be drop ped from horseback alongca Rented drag line made by dragging an ild bone or pleco of hide well saturated with the fetid scent nr they may be placed around or pnrtly under yny carcass on which tho wolves or coy otes are feeding, or along trails which they arc lu the huhit of fol lowing. Gelatin rfSpsuIoa quickly dissolve In the Juices of the stomach. Strych nine taken on an empty (Jlnjiach Bomotlmes kills In a very few min utes, but on a full stomach its action Is much slower, mid the animal may Mve time to Truvel a considerably distance. 8UMMKK KXCTIIHION UATKrtO NKWIMWr AM) VAyriNA ". hay. Now Is the time to plan for a good supply of green or succulent food for the cows next winter. No doubt this can ho more cheaply produced with the silo, but an dairymen do not huve silos, and they are not always pructl- cable on the small farm where only a few cov.s are kept. If you do not grow corn for ensilage, try gmwliig some routs this year. Mangel wurrel beets are uiienualed mid iicrhaps the best succulent finul fo winter. 'J'liere Is no food grown the cow likes better, and it is gen erally safe to leave this question to her :is to what Is good for her. The cow always keeps In better health when fed green food with grain, and It Is absolutely necessary to maxi mum milk production.
