COVOTE ANII WOLF HA1TS.
(Rural Northwest.)
A bulletin recently Issued by the
U. S. Department of AKricultui
says that success In trapping wolves
and coyotes depends largely on the
use of a scent that will attract them
and keep them tramping and paw
iug until caught. Meat bait alone Is
of little use and often, Indeed, Hcares
the animals away. Of the man scents
and combinations tested the fetid
bait has proved the moHt success
ful. The following directions for Its
preparation and use are given:
IMace half a pound of raw beef or
venison lu a wldemuuthed bottle
and let It stand In a warm (but not
In the buu) for five or Blx weeks, or
until It Is thoroughly decayed and
the odor has become as offeuulve as
possible. When decomposition has
reached the proper stage add a quart
of sperm oil or any liquid animal oil
Lard oil may bo use, but prairie-dog
oil la better. Then add 1 ounce ol
liucture of Siberian musk, or Ton
quln musk. If this cannot bo pro
cured, ubo in Its place 1 ounce of dry
pulverized castureum (beaver cas
lor) or 1 ounce of the common musk
sold for perfumery. Mix well and
bottle securely until used.
After setting the trap apply the
scent with a stick or straw or by
pouring from the bottle to the gruus,
weeds or ground on tho side of the
t:ap opposlto that from wRtch the
wolf would naturally approach
Never put scent on tho trap, aa the

This bait is tery attractive also
to cattle and horses, which are sure
to tramp over and paw out the
traps if set where they can gel at
them.
