Portland, Or. Dec. 13. Fire this morning destroyed the wholesale gro cery of Wadbams and Kerr Bros., in this city, entailing a loss of $300,000, partially covered by insurance. During the progress of the fire, the upper floor callapsed, injuring six firemen, one of them, Chris Houston, probably fatally. Grip Quickly Knocked Out. Representa tives of all religious denominations, ex cept the Roman Catholic, met in this city today to discuss what recommenda tions should be made to tho general convention next February, for making plans to secure legislation for uniform marriage and divorce laws among the several status. Hearst, who demanded a recount of the votos cast fop himself and Geo. 13. McClellan for mayor. The probable result of this decision is that McClellan will be seat ed on January 1, 11)0(1, as mayor of New York City. In her talk and the discussion, workers were urged to get the teachers interested and furnish helps on temperance Sun day. Mr. Willis, of the Umpqua Valley News, was introduced and spoke en couragingly of his faith in the work of the W.C.T. U. He believes women are the greatest moulders of character. Rev. Marsters made a go id plea for temperance, and practices what he preaches by voting for prohibition. Mrs. Ferguson emphasized the need of special training of children, and thought the Loyal Temperance Legion the best place to get it. I From facts stated one could not doubt that a nourishing W. C. T. Mrs. Marsters led in the discussion ' of the question of the "Relation of j Physical Culture to the Temperance Cause," and gave good reasons why a! well poised body is a g"eat help in all we unuertane. -v Mrs. Barzee gave excellent physical exercises. Noontide prayer was led by Mrs. Bishop, At 2 p. m., Mrs. Armltage and others gave facts to prove tbat the distribu tlon of temperance literature does pay. Mrs. Barzee conducted a Mothers' Meeting, the subject being, "Purity in the Home." The devotions consisted of scripture reading by Mrs. Armltage, prayer by Mrs. Ferguson and a vocal solo by Mrs. Owen. Mrs. Henry Eooth sang a beautiful solo. Lewis, representing Wade Richard son, postmaster at Milwaukee, Wis., today appeared before, the state land board with a bundle of certificates of sale of Oregon school land, for which Richardson paid S. A. D, Puter $18, 000. Upon examination all of the cer tificates proved forgeries. Attorney YV. W. Cardwell, who went to Salem today, will petition the su preme court for a stay of execution in the case of John G. Barnes, sentenced to be hanged next Friday, for the murder of Wm. Graham, near Glen dale. The petition will be aBked for in order-to present an appeal for a new trial.
