There is good reason to. expect that tthe general tendency in the price of farm lnndn will hereafLer be upward in all part8 of the United States, says the Kural Northwest. At the present time the advance in prleo is more no ticeable in some portions of the statos bordering od the Atlantic than else where. The price of farm lands has lecD relatively lower in some portions of the New England Ktates and innear Jy all of the South than the test of the United States. There have been a number of prosperous years for farmers In the South and in New Kngland, and naturally an advance in prices. Farm lands are even yet much cheaper in the Southern than In the Northern states. Few Northern people arc willing to go South to farm on account of the num ber of negroes there. The people in the South, who are used to negro la bor, got along much better with negro help than Northern people do. The amount of the agricultural pro ductions of the United States continues to increase faster proportionately than the agricultural population. This is' brought about by greater use of labor saving machinery on tho farms; more extonsive use of fortili.ors; improvo tnont In the quality of domestic ani mals; greater facilities for markotiug produce, and bettor management of farms. While tht? movement hero la comparatively new, it has i'or n long time been a feature of tho eCuciitionnl work In continental Europe. In the kunvt of u city tho work may be an entirely different thing from what It is In a rural or seiiiiriiral district. Ju the city the main idea may be an aesthetic one, combin ed with moral and physical training. Tho general irend of the "work In this country Ih practical, so that its appli cation will eventually have more or less effect on our industrial develop ment. .Manual training has been made a feature in many of our schools, and no one will deny that valuable results have been obtained from it. Vliut Tliy Mity AccompllHh. Agriculture in Hs broadest senso Is the primary basis of wealth in this country, and it seeniM essential that ef forts should lie made in our education al system to bring curly to the mind of tin- child facts which will be of value us emphasizing the importance and necessity of agricultural work. There is no bettor wtiy to do this than through a well managed and well con ducted system of school garden train ing. Aside from the fact that the in terest of the child is early awakened in an industry which means much to the future prosperity of this country, 1.1 to work is valuable in broadening lines of thought, enlarging the scope of tlic child's observation and improving its physlipio. The fanner who intends rearing a drove of pigs which will be farrowed during March or April should prepare for the changeable und severe weather soon to come. Two things especially deserve notice. The lirst is the sanitary Ntufouuiiings uf our brood sows. When perfect sanitation is secured much lias been done toward the insured healthi ness of the mothers and lite offspring. I o away with the old time medioil of allowing the sow to sleep iu a straw 1 i I o or in damp manure and furnish nice, c!e:in, dry quarters for licr. Make her quar ters in Ntu-h a way (bat no draft will come upon her, but still provide plenty uf good ventilation. These precautions, though they may seem simple, are vio lated every year by hundreds of farm ers, and few over know why they are ho unsuccessful. A matter of prime importance It is that the food consum ed be of u growing nature ralhcr than fattening. Many fanners throw out one bushel of corn after another to their hows, and tills is all they get ex cept the water they drink, it Is well known by fanners that corn Is fatten ing, ami yet hundreds persist In feed ing It when they know results exactly contrary from what Is desired are the only logical outcome. Of course wo cannot condemn the use of corn, but something must be fed that will bal ance against It. l'or lids 1 know of nothing better than a good warm bran slop with an occasional mixture of suc culent roots. On a considerable portion of the farms of New Kngland it will be found, the belter way lo do as much of the j plowing In autumn as circumstances; will permit, says American Cultivator, j The weather is usually suitable, the j ,tcains In good condition, and the farm er can take time t dn the work lit the j best manner without being In a hurry. Where the plowing Is properly done there kImuM be no need for repeating the operation In the spring. Kail plow ing allows of the seeding being done considerably earVer In spring, and that Is usually of much importance.
