A weak memory is sometlmeB a bless ing In disguise, especially for the de foudapts in luod d'auil raises. It is asserted that there are now 20, 000 former Ohio people residing in Oregon. With about 300,000 former Miesourians, it looks as if the state is pretty shy of native Oregonians. HARVEY BICE AT 'LARGE, - Charged Willi Four Burglaries Ranier, Wash. at Candidates for congress are almost as numerous as bop lice this spring. The Oregonlan mentions tbo following: C. J3. Moores, W. L. Tooze, T. B. Kay and W. C. Hawloy, of Marion county; W. I. Vawter, of Jackson county; P. 11. Kelly, of Linn county, and I. H. Iling nam, of Lane county. Walter Scott, the cowboy Croesus, of Death Valley, ran a special train from Los Angeles to Chicago, 22441 miles In 43 hours and 05 minutes, an average Bpeed of 51 miles an hour. When a cowboy takes a notion to do things, It's a pretty lively record that comes out of the scrimmage with any laurels to speak of. Or.YMI'IA, Wash., July 13. Four burglaries at Kanier, in this county, are charged up against Harvey Ulce, a 17-year-old Oregon boy, who, Beveral months ago escaped from the Salem Heform School. The Olympia police located Bice a few weeks ago, but were notified by the Oregon authorities that fiey believed the penitentiary and not the reform school was the proper place for the youth, and that they did not want him back. The Olympia authorities were warned that he was an irreclaimable thief. A warrant was sworn out today for Bice, but the officer who went to serve it found he had iled. (Bice is a native of Douglas County, his home being near Kiddle. He was sent to the reform school from Hose- burg about two years ago. He has a younger brother in the reform school also and another one in the penitentiary.) HE PASSED THE STAR. The Diamond Cure, The latest news from Paris is that they have discovered a oiamond cure for consumption. If you fear consump tion or pneumonia, it will, however, be best for you to take that great remedy mentioneu Dy w. t. Mcuec,oi vanieer, Tenn. "I had a cough for fourteen years. Nothing helped me, until I took Dr. King's New Discovery for Con sumption, Coughs and Colds, which gave instant relief, and allected a ner manent cure." If the timber land lawn had been en acted by legislators who knew the needs of the great West and had its interests at heart, there would have lieen less incentive to commit perjury. This coast ought to Iihvo greatsawmill- Ing enterprises and to secure these the timber of necessity must be owned in large bodies, a condition that under the approved narrow interpretation of the law could never be brought about, Thousands of good citizens bave com inittod perjury on the Pacillo coast in swearing to thoir land, filings, feoling that they were guilty of no moral wrong, and thoir respect for all law has thus been materially weakoncd. Sane land laws are what the country demanded more than the prosecution of those technically guilty of the viola tion of unjust Btalutos. Winston News.
