Surveys have been made by the S. P.
R. R. Co. for putting in right away a
temporary pumping plant at tbo foot
of Houck street, in Koseburp, for sup
plying their locomotives, etc., with
water, ab their round house in this
city. Che facilities of the local water
company have been overtaxed In trying1
to supply water both to the citizens of
the town and to the railroad company
for their engines and cars, and as a re
sult there have been frequent short
ages all around. Such a condition has
been very unsatisfactory, all con
cerned, hence the railroad company
have decided to put in a plant of their
own for operation during the summer.
This will be done just as soon as the
pump and the necessary mains can be
put in place perhaps within about ten
days. The recent shortage of water
supply for irrigation of lawns, and In
many instances for house use, following
a similar condition at frequent inter
vals last summer, has caused an active
revival of the agitation for establishing
a municipal water system. Such a
system will doubtless eventually be
established unloss the local company
furnishes a more satisfactory service
than was done last week. However, as
soon as the railroad company's plant is
installed, the local company can much
easier supply their other patrons.
OTHER K. It. IMPROVEMENTS.
The S. P. R. R. Co. 1b making other
extensive improvements in their yards
here. New livestock pens have just
been completed and more new tracks
are being laid in the southwestern part
of the yards. Tne piling has all been
driven for the new coal bunkers and
same are now being capped, prepara
tory for the high line track. Work on
the new brick roundhouse Is also ex
pected to begin at an early date. A
great many thousands of dollars ate
being expended by the railroad com
pany in this vicinity this year.

was largely consumed in the William
son land fraud case arguing various mo
tions of the defense for striking out
testimony, and also a motion for non
suit.
MASS OF EVIDENCE.
A mass of documentary evidence wus
. introduced during the forenoon session
; of the Wllllainson-Briggs-Uosner trial
yesterday, the effect of which is to show
Gesner's ucts in furtherance of the cun
isplracyand Briggs' knowledge of the
; illegality of the procedure. Corre
' spondence between Briggs, as United
States Commissioner ut Prineville, and
. Jjtty P. Lucas, then Register of The
j Dalles Land Ollice, stiowed that Briggs
had sent jn all the applications of the
timber entrymen: that he asked to
have the linal receipts all sent to him,
' and that Gesner "had written inclosod
checks In payment of final proof for
various entrymen, aggregating more
than 84000. I
The trial of Williamson, Gesnor and
Briggs will probably bo concluded to
day, as far as the evidence is concerned.
United States District Attorney Honey
announced yesterday that he would
conclude today. The Government has
many more witnesses, but probably
will not call more than three or four.
Judge Bennett, chief counsel for tho
defense, said that the course of the de
fense had not been detei mined upon
as yet, but that it would probably not
have more than two or three witnesses
Be thought the defense could complete
its case by today.
Four witnesses were before Judge
and jury against the three defendants
this forenoon. Ernest Starr told of his
experience in filing upon a piece of
land; of the arrangement whereby be
was to receive the money from Gesner
& Williamson, and of his appearance
before Briggs to file. He was rigidly
cross-examined by Judge Bennett for
the defense, but bis story was unshak
en. BAD CASE OP FOIIUETFUI.NESS.
Miss Maggie Glaze, who attracted at
tention as a witness with a peculiarly
failing memory, was the second witness
in the morning. She could remember
nothing more than that she had had a
talk with Biggs about filing on a tim
ber claim, and he bad told her that
there was $75 In it. Did ste remember
anything that was said as to who would
furnish the money? No, she had for
gotten closely, but after a close exami
nation by DiBtrtct Attorney Heooy,
and a reminder of past testimony and
her appearance before the grand jury,
she rallied enough to recall that she
was told that it wouldn't cost her any
thing. There was a smile In the court
room during the examination of .this
witness. Miss Glaze is said to be a
school teacher of Salem.
J. P. Lucas testified concerning tho
correspondence with Briggs. He

war. Tbe evident purpose of the de

by the enmity of tbe cattlemen toward
them.

When court opened yesterday morn
ing Attorney Dan J. Malarkcy entered
a plea of not guilty In behalf of State
Senator George C. Brownell, charged
with subornation of perjury.
Offered Crown of Norway.
Copenhagen, July 13. It la under
stood tint Prince Charles of Denmark
is willing to accept the crown of Nor-
way If King Christian and the Danish
government oonsent. Some members
of the royal family are In favor of his
acceptance of the crown, but King
Christian is believed to be opposed to
it. No deoislon, however, will be giv
en out before His Majesty returns from
Austria next week,
Drowns in Grand Ronde.
La Grande, Or., July 13. Henry
Fleshman was drowned in the Grand
Ronde River, about one mile above
this city, Monday aftornoon. Flesh
mah, who is about IB years of age, went
to the river with a younger brother
and a number of boys for a bath, and
in wading out in the stream, the broth
ers, neither of whom could swim,
stepped Into a deep hole, and before
assistance could reach them, Henry
had drowned, and the younger one was
insensible when taken from the water.

Grants pass, Or., July 13. About
15 additional locomotives, of the "hog"
type, have been placed on the mountain
division of the Southern Pacific to as
sist In transporting tbe many extra
trains from Grant's Pass to Roseburg.
Sunday each northbound passenger
was divided into four sections of 11
cars each, and the railroad men say
this number of coaches will be demand
ed from this tin." on until the Fair
closes, the heavy passenger tralllo be

Clark Exposition. Additional crews
and extra men are pressed into sorvice
in every department because of the
rush. To avoid accident every pre
caution is taken, and trains are run on
slow time over tbe mountains and
through Cow Creek Canyon, north of
Grant's Pass. The sections are run
about 20 minutes apart, and each is
precoded by a track-walker or road-in
spector over tbe more dangerous part
of tho lino.

charge of G. W. Donnoll, whosu sev
eral years of actual service lias ac
quainted htm with every foot of the
line over which he has supervision. He
has reserve crews, with construction
and wrecking trulns, placod at sidings
In the mountains, ready to respond to
a "hurry-up" call at any moment of
day or night. Thus far no wrecks or
accidentB of any nature have occurred,
which may be considered remarkable,
as a continual stream of trains Is pass
lug through Cow Creek Canyon. Work
