He found a rail road torpedo and prompted by ourloslty placed it on one of the railB of the rail road track and hit it with a stone. Twenty-six persons arc known to have been killed and SO injured by the tornado which swept ovor a portion of Montague county, Texas, Thursday. Oregon's hop crop Is threatened with destruction by pests. Honeydew is so plentiful among the hop yards that the situation has become alarming. Hop lice are much more plentllul than evor before. Red spiders are also raisfug havoc. Weather conditions have not been such as to either kill the lice or spiders. Unless crops are sprayed properly and promptly there Is great danger of losing almost the entire crop. Sjkes.' LANE TIMBER LANDS. Want Them Cruised for Purpose of Taxation. Assessor Geo. Staley, of Douglas county, and C. E. Roberts, an expert timber cruiser, with headquarters at Roseburg, were before the Lane coun ty court today, assisting Assessor Keeney in an attempt to induce that body to have all the timber,, lands of Lane county cruised in order -to get at the value of the land and place a prop er assessment on it. I Mr. Roberts has cruised the timber lands of Douglas county, greatly aiding Assessor Staley in his assessment of them. Such a system would be of spe cial benefit to Lane county, it is ar gued, because there is more timber here than in any county in the state. The matter is being considered today by the court. An Invention For TJtllixinf? the Mo tion of the Vnven, Itminiiife water has long been utiliz ed ton generating motive power, but it has only recently been found prac ticable to utilize waves for the same purpose. It has been demonstrated that motive power, which would be useful for many purposes, can be gen era ted by the motion of the waves, and that power so obtained, is far su perior to that from a running stream. A I.os Angeles man has devised a very durable and compact apparatus for obtaining power from waves, an Illustration of which is shown here, the 'apparatus being mounted upon a WAVE MOTOR. pier or wharf. Connected to the main driving wheel, which Is about thirty feet In diameter and Is mounted on a stationary shaft or nxle, is a hub with a metal extension having an inner periphery1 provided with teeth. A bar is secured to a weighted float in the water, this float preferably being a vessel filled with water, nnd connected with a quick acting ratchet clutch In the hub of the driving wheel. The motion of the waves Is trans mitted to the float, which moves the bar up and down, rotating the flywheel. This flywheel, of course, could be con nected to other pulleys and the power obtained used for any purpose desired. Choppy wnves would tend to transmit power at a comparatively high rate of speed, thus making it unnecessary to employ any considerable amount of gearing.
