A jury was easily secured in the United States court this morning to try Congressman J. N. Williamson, who, with his part ner, Dr. VanGessner, and Unite! States Commissioner Marion R. Briggs, is ac cused ol subornation of perjury. Stores BECKMAN'S PARDON Records Show that Governor Geer at tached No Conditions.' An examination of the records in the secretary of state's office shows that Wm. F. Beckman, the aged veteran of the civil war, who was rocently arrest ed for the alleged breaking of his pa role, was unconditionally pardoned by Governor Geer, and not upon the con dition that he should leave the state, as has been alleged, says the Salem Journal. Bcckraan is an old man nearly 80 years of age, and was sen tenced to life imprisonment in the penitentiary a number of years ago for the murder of his wife and stepson near Oak Creek, Oregon, He alleged that he did the killing in self-detonse. After he had served seven years of bis term he was pardoned by Governor Geer and went to Minnesota, where be entered the soldiers' home. The cli mate there did not agree with him, so he was given permission to be transfer red to the soldiers home in California. On his way there he stopped off in Portland to visit an old friend for a short time, and had his ticket for Cal ifornia in his pocket when arrested. (District Attorney Brown states that Beckman was pardoned and allowed to get out of the state before the local authorities knew anything about it, otherwise Beckman would have been immediately re-arrested upon leaving prison and brought back to Roseburg then Instead of now and tried for mur dering his stepson, Robert Ring. A petition for Beckman's pardon was circulated here in Roseburg, but it received only a few signatures. Beck man's pardon was finally obtained, however, through the efforts of Attor ney Chas. J. Schnabel, in Portland, and upon the showing that Beckman was slowly wasting away from consump tion. Freedom seems to have benefitted Beckman's health, however, for des pite the fact that he is nearly 80 years, old he appears to be in excellent physical condition.) - Bent Her Double. More old landmarks gave away yesterday morning to the ravages of flames, en tailing a loss of about $28,000, with in surance covering about one-third. The fire started in the kitchen of the Owl Cafe at 4 o'clock, and quickly spread to adjoining buildings, which were mostly frame structures. But for the fact that the Moxley brick building stands on the corner and the post office, a brick building on the west end of the frame range, the entire business dis trict might have been wiped out. Roy, the 3-year-old son of Porter Slate, was drowned in the Calapooia River, near . Tangent, on the eve of the Fourth of ' Julv. The child seemed to have a passion for the water, and although often admonished not to go Dear the river, was continually watching for an opportunity to do so. Monday evening be slipped away from the home and went to the river. When his parents discovered his absence they traced him to the water's edge, but about' 20 miu utea bad elapsed since tbe child's dis appearance, and though he was imme diately found in the water it was too late for resuscitation. Jacksonville, Or., July 1. Tine Cooper, a young man residing in Jack sonville, was seriously and perhaps fa tally Injured yestorday morning on the line of the Jacksonville & Medford Railway, In Jacksonville. The gasoline motor running between Jacksonville and Mod lord was making a return trip from Medford when, as it approached the Court House, it was suddenly thrown from the track by some ob struction. Examination disclosed that Cooper, who bad been drinking during the day, had been lying across the track, and the motor threw him off, derailing the car at the same time. ' Cooper's jaw was broken in two places, a large gash cut along the side of the head and his skull fractured. Forced to Starve, B. F. Gold Hill, Or., July 1. When three miles below Gold Hill Tuesday, the engine of second section No. 15 ran over, an unknown man, outting off his head and an arm and breaking both legs. When first Been he was walking on the track. The engineer gave the danger signal, but instead of getting off the track, the stranger laid down with his head on the rail. Before the train could stop, the engine ran over him, killing bim Instantly. The body was brought to this place and Coroner Cameron notified, but up on bis arrival he decided an Inquest hot necessary, as the evidence showed suioide. The insurance de partment of the German government has demanded of the Equitable and Mutual Life Insurance Companies that they deolare by August 1, next, in what manner they propose to separate their premium reserves on German policies from the general reserves and how ' they Intend to invest them.
