Washington, April 20 When Theodore P. Shoots took hold of the building of the Panama canal he stipu lated that ho should not be bound down to let politics Interfere with his work. This made wrathful several hundred congressmen whose names appear as indorsements on thousands of applies- tlons made by men throughout the United States for jobs under the canal commission. Chairman Shonts stands In line with the president's views of the fedetal govertimentand It took them about two minutes to arrlv3 at a complete under standing of the question concerning the blriugof employes. Shonts told the president that he wanted a free hand and tho president told him ho should havo it and that settled the matter. As a result a big pile of applications will be run through by the new chairman, )whb disregards all political Indorsements. Some thirty persons, all but about five of whom have bad previous experience, "have perfected an organization under the leadershlpof Prof.John A.Norling, an experienced bandmaster, recently from Lisbon, North Dakota. This week Prof. Norling and W. A. Burr, the music dealer, will go to Portland to select the Instruments and by May 1, the band will commence practice, meet ing twice a week for that purpose. A number of our local business men and other citizens have generously Bub Bcribed monthly donations to defray the expenses of instruction and the new music needed from time to time. As soon as tbe band becomes pro ficient enough, two evening concerts a week will be given on the streets. The band looks forward to a probable en gagement at the! District Fair in September. About Rheumatism. There are few diseases that inflict more torture than rheumatism and there is probably no disease for which such a varied and useless lot of reme dies have been suggested. To say that It can be cured is, therefore, a bold statement to make, but Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which enjoys an extensive sale, has met with great success in the treatment of this disease. One appli cation of Pain Balm will relieve tbe pain, and hundreds of sufferers have tcstilied to permanent cures by its use. Why suffer when Pain Balm affords such quick relief and costs but a trill e? For sale by Hamilton Drug Co., Hose burg. Minister Barrett May Go. Washington, April 20. The re port is published in Washington pa pers that John Barrett, United States Minister to Panama, anticipating re moval, has resigned. The State De partment has not received and knows nothing of Mr. Barrett's resignation, It has been understood ior several weeks that Mr. Barrett would ulti mately be relieved when Judge Magoon should reach Panama and enter upon the duties ns Governor of the canal zone. It is understood that Magoon will be both Governor of the zone and Minister of Panama. Magoon does not approve of Barrett's methods, and there is much friction between the two men. . If Barrett is relieved at Panama It is doubtful if be will be tendered any other diplomatic position. . Barrett has had considerable expert ence in the diplomatic service, and some of his work has been of much more than ordinary merit. He .Is a resident of Portland Or., and has at1 tatned a high position In public life entirely by his own ell'orta. Frightful Suffering Relieved. Suffering frightfully from the viru lent poisons of undigested food, C. G, Grayson, of Lula, Miss, took Dr. Klntr's New Life Pills, "with the' re sult," he writes, "that I was cured."
