A medicine that has been made and used for 20 years gives assur ance of its worth, and can be taken with a faith that they bave the very best cure tbe world affords. Mrs. David Dysert spont Tuesday system by lotting the Districts supply with Mrs. Geo. Or, to put the question more plainly, to what extent Js it right to take one man's money and apply it to the education of another man's child? Is the state justified in giving any education at all at public expense? The public school bas so interwoven lt-self-Into the frame-work of our laws, and into the social life of ocr people, that the abstraet question of Its right to exist cannot now be made a live issue. The constitutions of some states guarantee to all citizens a thorough and elllcient system of free public schools. Every state in the union is placed, in theory at least, on the same platform. Every nation in Christendom Is following in our foot steps. And now let me ask, why not reduce tho State Normal Schools to one? Have that one school the pride of Ore gon. Take the money appropriated for the remaining threo, and give all of our boys and girls a higher education at homo in our district schools. In fact, have the schools for the home, and not the home for tho schools. Now lean find Beveral small children too far away to attend school who should now bo in school. Their money as to be used In supporting these IJormalschools while they cannot enter Ihere. ' i I suppose you will say that tho wrlterfloes not believe In taxes to sup lisrt schools. Certainly I do, but not a wake of the people's money as they are nbweonducted. But some will say, look at the immi gration that we expect in Oregon. When immigration is onough to cause a neod for such a number of schools there will then be more helpto support them. Besides, I think if our state would adopt the Pennsylvania school Discussions, such as the foregoing, are now very opportune, as compara tively few people thoroughly under stand the purpose and work Of the Normal schools. To say nothing of what the future may develop in tbe way of increased population and necessary enlargement of our school facilities, Oregon now needs about 600 new teachers every year to meet the demands of growing schools and to take the places of those teachers who enter other occupations. As to the idea of a single Normal school in each state, "a large institu tion that would be a source of state pride," it has been demonstrated in Iowa and elsewhere that such an in. stitution coBts the state almost as much as several smaller schools located at different points and does not nearly so well accomplish the desired result. Normal schools are primarily designed for supplying trained teachers for the public schools. In the single1 Normal the curriculum is graded up so high that the graduates like those from the universities and colleges seldom go in to the country schools to teach, but in stead they enter other professions or secure positions in the city schools. Thus, in tbe country schools, where better trained teachers ai'8 most needed. the aid which the Normal schools are designed to supply Is lacking. The matter of the state supplying free .books to pupils of the district schools is a question for our legislators to determine. Salt Lake Herald: Although for some days it bas been a foregone con clusion that Governor Alva Adams would be forced out of tbe place to which be was elected last November by a majority of the honest people of the state of Colorado, many people hoped against hope that tbe legislature would have decency enough to respect the wishes of the people. If ever a man was honestly elected to a political office that man was Alva Adams. Nobody seriously denies that some frauds were committed by some demo crats; nobody can seriously deny that frauds were committed by republican workers for Peabody, his republican opponent. And every man who has the least spark of fairness in his com position will admit that if every fraud ulent ballot were eliminated there would still be a great majority in favor of Adams. This, indeed, was clearly demonstrated during tbe contest pro ceedings. But the republican members of the legislature were determined to steal the governorship. "Steal" is a barsh word, but it is the only word that fits. They found that thoy could not steal it for Peabody, so they arranged that Peabody should be sworn in and then resign, tbus giving the office to the re publican lieutenant governor, McDon ald. That is a hair line shading. It shows the desperation of the republican ras cals in the legislature, McDonald was not a candidate for governor. There fore be could not have been elected governor. The republicans were brazen up to a certain point, but when it came to seating Peabody for the term their effrontery deserted them. They feared that such a course might precipitate the state into civil war. So they "whipped; the devil around the stump." Now what sort of citizen is Peabody to enter into such a deal? And what sort of a citizen is McDon aid, who profits by it? Peabody knows as well as any man that the people of Colorado rejected him; he knows his republican colleagues esteem him so poorly that they would not consent to let him be governor for a second term. yot he brazenly acts as a stepping stone for the advancement of a man who has no more shadow of right to the gover shlp of Colorado than any citizen of Utah. feanony and McDonald must go down into Colorado history as twins in infamy, twins in corruption, twins in the consummation of the rottencst political swindle that has ever boon perpetrated in this nation, with the possible exception of the theft of the presidency for Hayes in 1S70. In tho dark chapter there is, how ever, one illuminating ray. As bright as a shaft .of sunshine in a dark room looms the action of Alva Adams. Be sought by well meaning friends to re sist with force the attempt of Peabody to assume the governorship, lie refused to commit any action not In full accord with his high ideals of citizenship. In stead of offering resistance, he quietly packed his belongings and left bis of fice. Alva Adams, private citizen, Is today more beloved, and will ever be more beloved by bis people, than Pea body and McDonald and their accom plices can ever hope to be. The name r.f A Jams will be known and honored long after the names of Peabody and McDonald have been buried beneath the scorn and contempt and obloquy thoy so richly deserve. K. P. Attention! Now Recognized to be Bright' s Disease Fearful Death List. A few years aco many deaths were reported from "Inflammation of the Bowels. Appendicitis IB now known to be the real trouble. A similar change has come in Kidney Disease. It is now disappearing into Bright's Disease. In 1860 the census reported deaths from Kidney Disease, but none from Bright's Disease. In 1890 ol the 37,519 deaths that year from Kidney Disease, over half were recognized as Bright's Disease. In 1900 of the 03,012 deaths, 63,748 (over nine-tenths) were known to be Bright's Disease. Thus the simple thing we innocently refer to as Kidney Trouble is now recognized as the commonest symptom of Bright's DisesBe. The worry and strain of the Ameri can life is runious to the Kidneys and Bright's Disease is sweeping the coun try.
